there is an official patch too jdtope... unfortunately if you installed the steam one you're probably self-screwed... alot of the problem people we having are tied to the fact that the version of C++ that shipped was a 2006 release, while the patch was done with a later version. I also linked the patch from this site... [sarcasm] so clearly I not only hacked the game but also this entire site... [/sarcasm]

Guys, the solution is posted above. You need to install the patch and then update the vcredist package. If you're on a 64bit system, you STILL need to install the x86 version as the game is a 32bit program. Notice how the game installs in the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

If you have windows update - there would be no need to download a windows patch from 2005 for service pack 1. Don;t believe any of these hackers - there is no patch

You just don't understand what you're talking about. Please stop spreading FUD here.

First of all, the patch is from "7/28/2009" as you can see from the microsoft download page. And it's not "for service pack 1", it IS a service pack for the VC++2005 Active Template Library (ATL)

I should start by pointing out that I have the Steam version of the game, and Steam automatically patched the game on its own. Game worked before the patch, and works fine afterward, no problem.

As part of that patching process, however, I DID notice that Steam automatically updated a Microsoft C++ 2005 distributable before patching the game itself. So that is probably what's going on here -- people using the wrong patch version (Steam patch on retail game, etc.), or not updating that Microsoft library first. Just a thought.

jdtope, I'll still try to help you despite your inappropriate comments directed at me. If you installed the patch from Steam, you will probably need to completely reinstall the game. Digital downloads work very differently from retail copies and in most cases the patches are not even remotely compatable. So take a break, come back... remove and reinstall the game, update the C++ ATL and then run the patch which you can safely download directly from this site. I understand being frustrated, and I hope you'll get it working. My last word on this directed to you...

And as a reminder you need the x86 ATL patch regardless of actual OS version due to the installed version of the program. Thanks, Game on y'all!

P.S. I subscribe to the "squeaky wheel" philosophy. If you make enough noise and scream and holler and point fingers and completely cry 'foul' - 9 times out of ten, the truly knowledgeable people, who mostly like to help ignorant folks like me, will give you step by step how to fix problems. (P.S. I play a rogue)

Just don't install it :'). If the people from BioWare want you to get the patch they will make it known that it is available. Is that the case now? No.

...3rd install of game almost done installing. However my gut instinct still cries out FOUL. So either this game is gonna work fully patched or I am gonna lose my hard drive, my bank accounts, my mother's wedding dress for my future bride, etc etc..I will be either happy or hacked. I am putting all my faith in humanity in Jihron Ghrad and Art Vandalay and others.....[DEEP BREATH]...

You cannot install the x86 download first as the game install will overwrite it with the older version. which means that after you do the game patch, you will have the same problem.

You have to install the game first, then you can do the x86 patch before or after the game patch.

This should NEVER happen. I knew the ATL patch was at it's latest version through Windows Update. So, the game essentially breaks itself by installing the old version. It's a bit like the old Win98 days, when you had to have the latest directX handy when installing an old game that overwrote the installed one. (As in: This game has the newest possible DirectX... at launch date, but not three years later, of course.)

Actually, it doesn't matter. Those MS VC++ 2005 libraries are designed to be able to coexist. What happens is that Windows keeps all versions of the library that have been installed, and provides the one that a program requests.

BioWare has officially released the patch! Try reading the entire thread, the link was already posted by someone else!

social.bioware.com/game_patches.php

For some strange reason BioWare are really busy with all sorts of things concerning the game, guess they just haven't quite had time to make a full page official announcement about the patch!

EDIT: Adding in the following details about the patch:

Dragon Age: Origins 1.01

Patch details:
  • fixed potential corruption of character statistics
  • fixed portrait appearance sliders when importing a character from the downloadable Character Creator
  • fixed import for preset face settings from the downloadable Character Creator
  • made Easy difficulty easier
  • slightly increased attack, defense, and damage scores for all party members at Normal difficulty
  • fixed video issues when running on a very wide screen display, including ATI Eyefinity displays
