I've almost finished my first playthrough as a Soldier.  I started the game on Veteran, but I'm finishing it on Insanity.

Planning a 2nd playthrough on Insanity the whole way....want to try a different class (and gender, and Renegade).

I'm down to either Adept or Vanguard.

Pros/cons?

Vanguard is by far the most fun to play class imho.

Check out Thisisme8's Vanguard topic and Average Gatsby's Adept topic for some excellent vids on using them on Insanity, they should give you some insight on which you'll prefer.

I did check those out, and I find myself leaning towards Vanguard.

I'm a bit worried that as an Adept I'll get sick of using the starter pistol all game....and that I'll get sick of using Miranda all game to set up Warp/Singularity combos (to be fair, I used her tons on my Soldier playthrough but I'd like some variety regardless of how awesome she is).

My only concern with Vanguard is there are some fights where Charge seems at best difficult to use well, and at worst suicidal.

Adept is a fine class, but I find Vanguard more fun for fast-paced play, and it's still versatile enough with Pull and Shockwave that you can clear out some enemies and knock them from cover first before Charging in with your shotgun. Reave is an awesome bonus skill for Vanguards, as it holds enemies in place long enough to get Charge ready, and boosts health for close-quarters fighting.

It takes a while to get used to the typical Charge->Shotty->Melee combo. There will be some situations when using Charge is going to be stupid, but those will be obvious.

It also gets easier once you get the Champion spec and Heavy Charge.

Vanguards for sure! i am about midway through on my sentinel insanity playthrough, it's not as exciting as vanguards.

Those vids made me convert to vanguard. I initially started as a vangaurd on hardcore, got fed up with getting killed left and right everytime i charge, so ended up just spraying stuff with smg for like 1/2 the playthrough, finally gave up and did an infiltrator run which was laughably easy with cloak and snipe on anything hard like scions and harbringers.

Imo learn vanguard, it's mainly just charge on the outside mobs, take a shot then go into cover, rinse and repeat. clears rooms faster, you'll die many times but hey, that's how you improve :D

Might I suggest Engineer? Can Snipe from a distance, Drone to distract bosses, very varied play.

I got the impression that Eng wasn't a very strong class, but I could be wrong.

I was kind of sad at how quickly Tali's drones died on my Soldier playthrough when I used her.

I played the game trough first time with the Sentinel, good choice of powers, and the Tech armor really gives u a 2nd life(not to mention it works untill discharged.)

only drawback is that u have only acces to pistols/heavy pistols for weapons, and even with the exstra weapon profencincy u pick up halfway the game it can still be tough, then again, the fact that u have both Overload and Rip in your arsenal allows u to pick squad mates who can cover the other stuff. as bonus power i would suggest Slam(from Miranda) or Inferno Grenade(from Zaeed) both are very effective(mainly the grenade power) and allow u to adapt to your squad.

Engineer suffers from a lack of cool factor. No bullet time, no cloaking, no Singularity, Charges or big shiny armour. They simple summon a Drone which dies. The thing is this Drone auto pulls agro on anything it hits not to mention can stun them for a second through armour.

Neither the Adept or the Vanguard like large protected enemies (especially YMRI mechs) whereas an Engineer can solo kill one without taking a scratch, fairly quickly and at zero risk.

I don't think you'll need to depend on Miranda all game nor have to use the pistol as you stated. During the Tali recruiting mission on hardcore and insanity, you're able to pick up the Geth Pulse Rifle, I recommend doing so. Once you reach the point on the collector's ship where you have the option to choose between a Shotgun, assault rifle or sniper rifle, I recommend picking the assault rifle for an Adept. The rapid fire combined with warp ammo can help strip away the opponent's barrier / armor.

As far as squad's concerned, I think it all depends on the mission. Miranda can be beneficial with her warp, but remember, you also have warp and so does Thane. I haven't had the opportunity to play an Adept as of yet, but right now I am doing my insanity run on an Engineer, in which has a similar play style. As my Engineer, I usually take Miranda or Garrus with me for the overload and then pick either Mordin for the dual incinerate, Grunt for his weapon damage / incinary ammo, or Jack for her biotics. I'm assuming that as an Adept, you'll need Garrus or Miranda for the overload, but I'd definately take Mordin with me in most missions or Tali during mech dominate missions.

The Engineer as a lot more utility than you give it credit for. I think they are the most underrated class for an Insanity run, or perhaps are tied with Vanguard. Engineer's powers specialize in removing armor. Their overload gives them an edge over mechs while incinerate gives them an edge over organics. This means that an Engineer is balance in both scenerios.

In addition, Drones (though weak in some cases) have great crowd control by distracting the target. If I am outnumbered, I find myself sending my drone to one target as I focus and wear down another. In some cases, I find myself spamming drone, particularly against Krogan who are always distracted by them. This practically disables them, allowing me to destroy their armor. Once they're in the red, I use Cryo (which has 3 points in it)  to freeze them and then burst them into little shards.

Squad members with crowd control also benefits the Engineer as now you have two classes capable of it oppose to one (which you will mostly likely get running as an Infiltrator or Soldier.) Garrus can be helpful with countering flanking via concussive shot / overload. Miranda can be helpful with her warp, preventing health regeneration from Vocha and Krogan. If you run with either of them, you have a strong edge since you will have two overloads.

On my insanity run, I am hardly having any trouble at all. It doesn't take long for my squad to destroy their armor and with my drone, I'm able to slowly pick them off one by one. Hell, I played through most of Grunt's mission alone with my squad members dead. I doubt a Vanguard could do that.

In conclusion, I think an Engineer is very strong if you know how to play them. Their playstyle differs from most classes, Adept being the closest to them. They require strategty, precision and a lot of micro managing, in contrast to the Soldier's Adreniline rush spam.

Well, at the moment i'm trying the game a 2nd time with a Adept on hard, and Slam as bonus power, and i must say, i already miss the tech armor i had as sentinel, also, is it possible that the shield strength differ per class? couse i'm trough it in a few shots as an adept, hell even my shield bar has an different color...

As for the Engineer, its simply the tech version of the Adept, even if he has a few powers less. and less offencive ones, so if u want more thinking, go Engineer :)

Hmmm, maybe I'll give Engineer a 2nd look. I wasn't hugely impressed by Tali's drones but it sounds like it's possible for Sheppard to use them in more useful ways.

I do like how Engineers *always* have something useful to do with their power cooldown, where as Vanguards can be in situations where Charge is useless/very risky (although I think taking Reave as a bonus power provides a great 2nd option).

Tough choice...

I used to be a big Vanguard fan in ME1 and my first playthroughon ME2  was a Vanguard.
I'm currently playing through on Insanity with a Infiltrator and it's such a great class.

Infiltrator FTW !!

Decided on Engineer after all.....not bad so far. Drone spam is amazing for holding off charging Krogans....Drone is like a short duration crowd control that works on anything, and chips away at their shields to boot (and has a really short cooldown).

I really underestimated the drone since the squad people with drones (Tali, Legion) have a MUCH longer cooldown on their drone (where as Sheppard's is only 3 sec).
