I never got that, I always got the impression that if Commander Shepard died you really screwed the pooch.  it would be a viable ending but it would not be a blaze of glory it would be an ending.

As mentioned before, the minimum number of squadmates that survive with Shepard is 2.

If you bring 1 loyal member with you to fight the Reaper, 1 non-loyal 'hold the line' survives.
