thane is sick, and may die before 3... mordin is old as hell, a solid decade older than average salarian life expectancy, so he may bite it soon too...

other than that, you spent a lot of time building your team and getting them focused and loyal, if you get everyone's loyalty they should all be possible squadmmates in 3, especially Miranda, Jacob, Grunt, Tali, and Garrus... Grunt's loyalty is the fiercest even before his personal quest. Miranda and Jacob leave Cerberus for you, and Garrus and Tali have been with you since the beginning.

I think Legion will be as well, there is so much more to his character but I can see him returning to the Geth (although my hunch is he was specifically designed by the geth to help you)

Samara wanted to return to being a justicar, but if she survives ME2 she'll make an appearance in 3 as she says she would come whenever Shepard calls.

Point being is it would be a major let down to write characters off when you spent so much time getting them and having them fight beside you. I also think Ashley/Kaidan and Liara will return... and then the love triangle wil come into play.

Then of course for those Sheps that survived a blood bath, new squad mate options will have to be available, but I bet only one or two, rewarding those who saved everyone in 2 with a larger pool of characters
