i'm thinking of making her assassin/duelist. or should i make her assassin/bard? i'm not trying to do massive damage as a rogue, so i won't even put anything into the archery brackets.
thanks.
looking for a good rogue build.

what skills/talents should i invest in? i hear that steal and lock picking are useless. because if i have high enough cunning, i can lock pick nearly anything.

Lock picking is well worth it, but I'd put in on Leliana as a support NPC. Despite what you may think, lock picking is actually used to detect and disarm traps as well as opening chests. Why is that important? Well, you get xps for opening chests and disarming traps. In fact, everyone in the party gets xps for doing that, not just the person doing the actual deed.
So, lock picking that chest for 30 xps gives all 4 characters in the party each 30 xps!! Well worth it!

Stealth, yes. At least to the third tier.
Have your party Hold down the hallway. Stealth up to the door, open it, walk into the room and see how many baddies there are. Position yourself behind that nasty mage and backstab-stab-stab him while the rest of your party storms in through the door. Remember to release your party from Hold before you begin stabbing.
Combat stealth lets you disengage from combat and approach that mage/archer in the back without taking fire.

Check out this guide--basically what Zy-El just told you, but goes into more detail. Has suggestions for builds for all classes of characters, so it may help with leveling up your companions, too.
I'm following the recommendations in the guide for my DW rogue right now and, let me tell you, by level 6 she was slicing her way through enemies like a hot knife through butter. I'd take at least the first level of Deft Hands, as there are quite a few chests (and maybe even a few traps, depending on the origin) in the origin stories and Ostagar, where you won't have Leliana.
