just one more point, the Bioware tag Gaider has on his icon doesn't mean squat, he's here as Dave Gaider, he represents himself, not Bioware. i'm fairly sure he doesn't get paid to leave comments here, he does it because that's what he likes to do outside of his work, just like everybody else here.

Don't let a few bad apples amongst a bunch of people who enjoy your presence on the forums deter you from posting here. It doesn't matter where you are on the internet and even if people know who you are, you'll still get the same crap. It is the internet after all.

Years of modding on a active pokemon forum and website (where unsurprisingly the average age/gender was about 13ish/male) has taught that when someone bites, you just bite back, and a lot harder (which doesn't automatically mean be rude, because sometimes the biggest face slapping response is to respond in pure kindness and full of manners). A thick skin never hurt anyone, although they can be a bit itchy ;)

True that.  I remember being (pleasantly) surprised that writers/devs came here under their real names. Even *I* don't do that :)  Internet is too easy to be harassed or anonymous.   Brave souls they are.  I use Shanti so much ( for years) online as my *name* and work persona that i actually gave that at the bank on accident. :wizard: Don't tell my husband or I wont be allowed to post anymore hehe  I was SO tempted to try Flemeth's " Names are pretty, but useless."  but i did not.     The internet is a funny thing, you never do know who you are talking to so I always try to be on my semi-best behaviour.   :police:

My first post eva!

Really the only reason I visit these boards is because of the posts by David Gaider and other devs. That is saying a lot because these boards are truly the worse - my game data is never updated, character avatars are x's and I have to log in like 20 times even if 'remember me' is checked.... anyways, I absolutely love the game (own the 2 console copies), love the lore and love trying to get everyone to play the game.

We all know you don't have to post here but I think its pretty awesome that you - it says a lot about you as a person that truly believes in their world. Please continue to coddle and protect it as it grows.

Figuredhead of Bioware not so much. Big Daddy of Dragon Age - oh yeah!

Please keep posting David!

I like having David on the forums. He is way better equipped to answer the gameplay questions than me. He helped make the game itself after all. I can offer some general answers, but if you want insight into the game, he's the guy to look to.

I was just impressed they even had a system to make that stuff automatic without bogging down the forums servers, as buggy as it might be.

What a farce. How could you NOT judge that site by that article? It wasn't professional at all, and very inaccurate in its content.

~ Roxy

hmm - i don't know if it would make sense running a website for the sole purpose of bashing.
greywarden.com is a fansite after all.

on "topic":
i have a lot of respect for david's thick skin really. even if attacked with complete nonsense he still has the patience to respond in a very distinguished and reflected way.
i don't know if i could stay that cool if i were in his shoes sometimes. but i guess working on a big project like this you get used to people questioning your ideas.

to me he is the soul of this forum and it would be a big loss if he would for some reason decide not to bother anymore.

I think it's always nice when anyone involved in the dev team takes the time to speak to forum members, I've enjoyed reading David's responses across several threads. What amazes me is the occasional malcontents who are, to put it nicely, less than respectful toward the devs who post here. One particular debate with a mod-author (and I use the term loosely) or indeed this article springs to mind - personally I wouldn't waste my time on said elements, but it is funny to read some of David's responses. Seems to come down to a lot of people who like to give it out but don't like it back, imo.

see even coming from an employee of bioware himself,  David is definatly good to have for insight on the game as he helped create it Image IPB so people who flame David should well, in short, either not type or go do something else like make some toast :Image IPB, im not saying dont come up with a well structured counter argument if it actually has a point, if its just for the sake of an argument then dont bother posting at all,

constructive criticism is always welcomed anywhere imo, it helps develope games, and various other things, but just pointless flamming is well as i said pointless,

the fact that David goes out of his way to make posts and keep in touch with the community shows how much he cares, i only ask that people appreciate what he is doing, because usually people don't appreciate something until it is gone, and i for one would rather it not be gone.

P:S thank you for the quote Victor Image IPB

I don't agree with most of what he says around here, I don't even particularly like his writing much. doesn't mean I would begin to judge him by it, and he certainly has the right to post whatever he wants here (or anywhere) Some of you guys need to take a step back and keep things in context, and stop taking him, and yourselves, so seriously.

I seek out his posts mainly to learn more about the game. I particularly love it when threads gets off the mark with overly emotional speculations or theories about characters or plot development and Gaider comes in like, "What the hell? No-ooo. <Insert logical argument.>"

I do believe you need to make sure your router ( if you indeed have one) has the proper ports cleared and then if everything is technically sexay then you still need to have someone look at your player profile to give your profile some ooomph and urgency.   I'm not saying that it *is* that way, but it sure seems that way.  I will clickie your profile to see if it helps for you :)

Im glad that some of the Bioware folks answers something on this forum.. i wish there where more activity from them, but I guess beeing a developer is a busy job, and to be fair we aren't the easiest crew to handle. But as I said Im glad someone takes the time to respond now and then... Be it whipping or infromation.

Quote: "Honestly, if the definition for a "true RPG" is so narrow that every feature of it must be strictly adhered to simply because it's traditional then I don't think it's a very useful genre."

My only beef with Gaider was his little kick towards the "true RPG'ists", he has to understand that crpgs wont be Godlike good again until they alienate the "Call of Duty generation" and the "Bethesda fanboys". ;-D

If you carter towards both, you'll be to the game(RPG) industry what Limp Bizkit was to Metal. Yes they sold records, but look them now.. And do you want to be a Fred Durst?

He is the maker, and I am his prophet. Not the "consort- liked me for the nice singing voice' prophet. The 'lives on locusts, spreads his word, and roams aimlessly in desserts ranting at the sky' prophet.

Enough said.

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree. RPGs should not resemble games like Call of Duty, and they should not attract the kind of players that only play gams like Call of Duty.

I'm trying to picture you roaming aimlessly about on a field of whipped meringue and chocolate cookie trees.

Less threatening image than your usual locust-driven prophet provides, but hey -- I'll take what I can get.

Especially when her most threatening statements involve providing cookies and milk and baking rocket shaped cakes.

Hmm,

I actually liked the pre-fight banter between the commentators.

Wish there was some boxing on tv tonight...

As to David Gaider:

I don't agree with everything he says. Especially when he defends Alistair ;)

But I always felt he was here, posting as David Gaider and not as Bioware Employee #XYZ.

And if he gets a bit blunt from time to time. Well, he and the others out themselves out there. When you create something, you put a bit of yourself in and as professional as you may try to be, it will always be personal.

I wrote one book. A while after it got published, a friend of the family said "Well, now this one is out, but for the next one we'll sit down so you don't make the same mistakes again. There is no reason why they shouldn't be avoided."

I felt like strangling her, more so than people who romance Zevran want to strangle Wynne.

I have nothing against Mr. Gaider. I have to thank him for being a great writer, in fact. Well, perhaps there is something... I sent him a friend request and he refused it! :( :( :(

Of course he did, he has a reputation to think of you know. He can't dirty it down by being your friend. <_<

Yeah...that is kind of old fashioned these days with all the more interesting nuts around.

That said.

On Mr. Gaider.

There was a time when the DAO boards were more active with developer comments. Other writers posted, other developers posted. I think much of it was because even if you disagreed with what he said, or they said, the differences were not expressed in heated, condescending or unprofessional terms.  If we didn't like his romance idea- we'd say "It is not our style, we prefer 2#$%" instead of "yo gaider you suxxors and don't know how to write."

If we felt Sheryl said something inexplicable, we'd ask her why. We didn't brand her sexist by default.

That kind of thing that is basically indicative of treating writers and developers as professionals and human beings worthy of courtesy, and not as our personal wish fulfilment machines that we can speak to abusively.

We benefited a LOT from these interactions because for one, we got insights into the motivations of these characters, the setting they created, little nuggets about the world that made it much richer when we actually played it because we could understand what the writers were thinking when they wrote it.

Today, it seems like Mr. Gaider is one of the very few who still ventures out here to communicate. Despite the horrible way some people have chosen to express your disappointment or disillusionment instead of doing so maturely. He knows more about the game and the characters than most people here, so I'd say what he has a lot of value to add especially to those of us who are open minded and curious about lore, setting and characters.

The thought that someone could dub him as a "nuisance" is just incomprehensible to me.  Even though he completely broke my heart and stomped it in DAO, I think he is an awesome guy with great insight into the genre, characters and story telling.
