So:
Definitely - Liara, Kaidan/Ashley, Legion, Grunt, Garrus, Tali
Maybe - Jack, Thane, Miranda, Jacob
You are the weakest link, goodbye - Zaeed, Kasumi, Samara, Morinth, Mordin

The definitely+maybe pile seems like too many to me. It is possible they could combine certain ME2 characters together as well (e.g. Miranda/Jacob), but too many of those would get fiddly so I don't know. It really depends on whether they will be equally generous to each LI. Jack seems much more likely than Thane at this point, does that mean one could become recruitable but the other won't? At this point there are a whole lotta fans they can... annoy to put it lightly heh.

Excellent post, Apollo. When it comes to character write-offs (into NPCs w/ cameo appearances, at least), we're definitely on the same page.

My current theory is that the developers will create an 11 man team in ME3: the two LI possibilities from ME1, the LIs from ME2 (sans Samara/Morinth), and 3 new characters that join the fray. This way, the minimum amount of squadmates a player can have is 5 (2 ME1, 3 ME3), with the ME2 crew having lesser roles that are variable with whomever survived the mission (only the players LI choice in ME2 gets important content). So something that kinda looks like this:

Liara
Ash/Kaidan
*Miranda
*Jacob
*Thane
*Jack
*Garrus
*Tali
***Aria T'Loak
***Veetor
***Anderson

*- Can die in suicide mish
***- Just cool NPC placeholders for the three new ME3-ies

This way, 11 character is the same number they worked with in ME2, while the minimum (5) is the same number of squaddies you ended up with in ME1. This satisfies their "cheating on your LI will have consequences!" statement, and eliminates a good chunk of game content that would be needed for suicide mish death variables.

@ Collider again--

Haha, no worries, no offense taken! To be honest, I'd probably be doing the same to you had I not been so confused as to how to break up the quotes and my text... lol

You're right--I don't really know how much space it's going to take. I'm trying to speak from a logical standpoint (more variables=more content=more space), but it may end up being as simple as a number change. My fear is that this will make the characters flat and potentially meaningless to the storyline.

After seeing your responses though, I'm reconsidering my stance on the "characters influence on the plot". I suppose you're right in saying that importance to the overall story does not make a great character. In fact, you could argue that Liara (and Tali for that one moment in the opening) is the only story-relevant character in ME1.

In the end, I probably am just over-dramatizing the whole situation. But my point still remains that if they DO choose to bring everyone back...I'll be shocked and damn impressed. Here's to hoping?

It's okay! I get Debby Downer a lot,
along with Little Debbie and Debbie Does Dallas. Least fond of that last
one.

But back on topic, Bioware can't please everyone, no matter
what they do. Some people are gonna be pissed off no matter what. Some
squad members will likely return, in varying degrees of importance, but
from a programming perspective, I can't see how everyone would get what
they want without several years of development and an expensive 5 disk
game...

I'll still play it, though, whatever happens to my squad.

XD Dear god, Debbie Does Dallas? I thought MY nicknames were bad. You've got this down to the tee though- the fact of the matter is, whatever happens to the squad, or the amount of discs required, we're still gonna buy and play this game. Just try to get it as "right" as possible, Bioware! :) No pressure...

So far as variables go, unless we are in the game industry we don't really know what we're talking about in regards to disk space, not to mention it's up to Bioware how much those variables will entail. For example, a news story is not exactly eating up disk space.

You're right about Liara. She's the most important character in ME1 yet plenty of people like the other squad mates, even though they're not vital or as vital. Wrex for instance is a fan favorite but you don't even need to recruit him.

That is important thing to consider regarding how meaningful characters are to the storyline. It's really hard to imagine some characters like Garrus or Jack who have no political sway being on the same level as Jacob/Miranda/Liara/Kaidan/Ashley/Tali/Legion. But does Garrus need to have a large role in the storyline? no, not really. Even if Garrus did not give the Thanix Cannon in ME2, he'd still be awesome and well liked. Heck, you don't even need to recruit him in ME1.

...if that's the only people we're getting back, then they toss in a bunch of new people for me to try and rush to get to care about before the epic conclusion, I am going to be spectacularly underwhelmed. I understand the limitations, and that there is a budget, but there's only so much shoving aside they can do to appease the newcomers and whatnot before it guts the story.

There was no point to even putting the other characters in the game if we're going to end up with a handful from only the first, a few newbies in 3, and a bunch of half-baked-Awakenings-esque cameos for everyone else. Might as well had Shepard solo the Collector Base. I hear Red Mage/Ninja is good at soloing stuff. :P

Agreed. Bioware ABSOLUTELY MUST not cater to the newbies of the series. Honestly, you should WANT to encourage them to buy your first two games to immerse themselves fully--more oney for them, right?

I might also add this. From
Gameinformer, interviewing Casey Hudson.

Q: Certain party members
from the first game can be recruited in Mass Effect 2. Does that mean
we'll see characters from this game make a return in ME3?
A: You will
definitely be able to see characters from ME2 in ME3, as long as
they're alive in the end of your story. It's a challenge for sure, but
it's also going to be a huge payoff for players of the Mass Effect
trilogy to see what happens with all these characters and storylines
started by the first two games.

Hrrrrmmmmmmm!! He never does state "squadmate" in that interview, just that you'll "be able to see characters from ME2" and that "it's going to be a huge payoff for players". Still, even as NPCs ME2 squaddies have potential. The way they handled Wrex in this game was pretty damn good with me.

True he doesn't say squad mate. But I get the impression from the interview that "huge payoff" and "what happens with all these characters and storylines started by the first two games" indicates more than just cameos.

Here is my theoritical list:

These represent the squadmembers that have not died or had the chance to die in ME2
  • Liara
  • Survivor from Kaiden/Ash
  • Joker
The rest and the reason:
  • Miranda - only if she was LI in ME2
  • Jacob - only if he was love interest in ME2
  • Garus - only if he was love interest in ME2
  • Jack - only if she was LI in ME2
  • Thane - only if he was LI in ME2 (you somehow helped him find a treatment for his disease with Hanar help or Cerberus or someother freaky medicine   otherwise he dies )
  • Grunt - if he survived, otherwise they will introduce a new Krogan (fans love krogans for some reason)
  • Tali - if she survived
NPC that will not be in 3 as a squadmate(even if the lived in ME2):
  • Mordrin - too old
  • Samara - signed on for one mission
  • Morinth - bit player, no character building whatsoever in 2.  Can't see them bringing her back for squad role.
  • Legion - I do think he will have a major cameo role if survived (much like Wrex did in ME2)
  • Zaaed - bit player, signed on for one mission
  • Katsumi - same as Zaaed
Why?  Well because:
  • Your LI spot
  • ME1 survivor (if they were your LI, they will also fill that role)
  • Liara (I really don't think they will kill her off in the DLC)  If she is your LI, then she will also fill that spot
  • The rest of your squad is pretty much filler, much like they have been since the first one. So they could plug in any former squadie that survived for the rest of your team, totally ignoring their ME2 story and adapting them to ME3's plot.
  • I think there will only be 6 squad spots.  I believe they are going to focus on wrapping the story up, so you spend less time on squad "loyalty" then you did in ME2.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share what I thought.

The loading screens of ME 2 repeatedly remind us our decisions will have big repercussions in ME 3.  I have no doubt part of that will be if you are such an incredible failure and most of your crew died, you may have to deal with a smaller team

personally I think that all squadmates should be recruitable (if they survived) but we can only recruit 8 of them.  This way the choice of your squad is truly unique to you and it will make you think about if you want to leave a character out in the cold for someone who is stronger or more diverse.

BTW I chose 8 characters cause people have complained that 10 characters is to many.  So I figured that 8 characters would be a nice round number since its 2 more than the first game but 2 less from the second.

This is cut & pasted from my other posting, since this thread suddenly alived again:

"My theory ? Since so much squad mates in this game, then the story are about which one you pick would become your squadmate or NPC. Like perhaps choosing Wrex or grunt for perhaps next candidate for leader for Tuchanka United Krogan. Whoever not to be the leader became your squad mate. If both dead then just a mission for promoting a krogan leader that backing your cause. That or your mission squad became more larger and involved mechanized Hanar, elcor, geth armature, or cyborg thresher maw.... "

Your entire ME2 crew will die in a surprise STG/Spectre attack. Shepard, hunted by the Council and alone will escape the massacre. Together with Anderson and Hacket Shepard will reunite with Liara/Ash/Kaiden on his last mission to save the galaxy.

Anyone in ME1/ME2 that can die will most likely be reduced to a minor role in ME3, like Kaidan/Ashley and Wrex in ME2. I highly doubt you'll be able to recruit any of your ME2 squad since it's just too much alternate content they would have to create.

How do you know Sina? You've got only one game to base it upon, that's not enough.
