Okay so my friend got ME2 on PC, he is running with Windows 7 64bit
AMD Athlon 64+ Dual Core processor 4450B 2,29ghz
2 GB of ram
Radeon HD 4550 (or something of 45xx series)

so when he starts a new game the loading screen pops up, the loading screen goes stuck allmost immidietly, still can hear the sounds and only thing you can do is to go to task manager, see the application is not running and close it, we have allready tried downloading the amd optimizer, changing graphics / screen resolutions / updating drivers
we also noted that the CPU usage jumps to 100% when you start the new game and then drops to 0 - 5%

I dont know if this thing is related to that problem but he also cant see the tab for "set affinity" on process tab in Task Manager when we tried to run it with 1 core, we have also tried run the game in Windows XP mode and setted to run as adminstrator, also tried reinstalling

maybe I should had readed the posts here more carefully, this solution seemed to work (copyed from other thread)

I found a solution for people with the freezing problem at the selection of new game, unfortunatly this only works for duo or quad core users.

1) Go to "Start"

2) Type in "run"

3) Type in "msconfig"

4) Go to the "Boot" tab

5) Select "Advanced Options"

6) At this point the startup number of processors should show "1" and should be unable to be changed.

7) Uncheck "Number of Processors"

8) Check "Detect HAL"

9) Click "Ok", then click "Apply"

10) Reboot your PC.

If all goes according to plan, when you reload, you should be able to do this:

11) Go to "Start"

12) Type in "run"

13) Type in "msconfig"

14) Go to the "Boot" tab

15) Select "Advanced Options"

16)

You should again see the start up number of processors. However, this

time when you click the drag down menu you should be able to select the

proper number of cores (4 in my case).

17) Click "Ok", then click "Apply".

credit goes to Bluewolf35948. This worked for me hope it works for you guys, im able to get in and have been playing fine so far. Sorry i couldnt help those with single core problems. Much love, bluewolf said dont forget him when you name your first-born's.

I have the same issue. The game freezes on the loading screen when starting a new game. I can't get in at all. Tried various fix's on the forums. Nothing works. I guess I will have to wait for a patch.

AMD Athlon 64 +3800

Nvidia 8800GTS

3.0G Ram

Windows Vista

Same for me, I have a quad core, and windows detects all my cores (therefore the solution above is useless, it was the first thing i did after installing windows)

Only one core as well. Absolutely freezes on start new game. Got a yellow holo mass relay with some green numbers (which I take is the loading screen) and at that point it stops. Music keeps playing though.

this is frustrating. guess it would be easier just to buy a suxbox360...i meet all the requirements to run this game, and have a dual core processor, ran the installer (which failed 2x before it actually went through all the way), opening cinematic launched (from staying idle after opening credits start) hit new game, tried importing my character, tried just creating a new game with a male, and with just a female, all i get is a black screen after my base options are chosen...there i can just shoot what sounds like a machine gun, but i still can't see anything. wtf. can some moderator please help us here? also, running windows XP if that helps

Wow i have the same exact problem but i thought it was because my graphics card does not meet specifications maybe i will put off buying a brand new graphics card until some one comes up with a solution to this problem and it may work for me as well

Looks like it may take them several weeks if not a month or more to patch all these issues....damn....I want to play ME2 a lot, and all I can get is a second of the loading video before the fantastic "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" crash. Argh.

Exact same problem as everyone else. I too initially thought I may have misread the minimum system requirements but I guess we are all learning it's just Biowares exceptionally poor customer service.

Come on, if you don't actually read our complaints and problems at least get a dev to post on here and pretend you're reading them.

You have 8 gigs of RAM and running 32 bit? Why?

Just talked to an "EA representative" via chat. Pretty sure it was an AI. Anyway, he said update drivers, but I've already done so.

My solution? Keep flooding the forums with complaints until they fix it. That'll learn 'em.

This is happening with me as well, the only thing is, I'm playing on the 360. New game+, just as the loading screen for before you wake up after Normandy gets rocked.

It locks up when running from disk, and when installed to the HDD.

What are the minimum system settings for the PC version? If you're on the borderline system-wise, are there are any good tips for increasing the chances that you can get it to run decently?

LokiLoki11, I might just be rephrasing this but to find Detect HAL, press Windows+R (run box), enter in "msconfig" and hit enter, go to the "Boot" tab, select "Advanced Options" and it should be in that dialogue. If you have XP SP3 it should be there, it is only removed for Windows 7 users - like myself.

However, I have a quad core, flatten the game's recommended specs, and both windows and Mass effect are detecting all four of my cores, so for me this issue has nothing to do what so ever with detecting CPU cores.

in fact, I've managed to make mine go from looping on the animation to crashing to desktop, so Ive open one of the the Unreal Engine's dump files and its telling me the error is an invalid pointer write..... copied and pasted from error analysis:

DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: INVALID_POINTER_WRITE

If anyone can get mass effect to go from freezing to crashing (mass Effect has stopped working or similar) please let me know and Ill try and have a look at the crash dump files for you and see if it is the same error.

I found that in the link Recnamoken posted there's a very simple way to stop the loading screen freeze:

-Start up the game.

-When it says: PRESS ANY KEY. Don't press anything.

-Wait a while and a trailer will begin playing. After that it'll go back to the previous screen.

-You can now proceed to the main menu and the loading screen problem should be gone, when you start playing.

P.S.: The game lagged a lot though, but I think it might just be my pc, coz when I went to the task manager (while the game was running) it showed that 100% of the CPU was being used.

I don't think that the business about any CPU devoting 100% to the game is a significant datum with regard to game operation.  On the other hand, I do know that this game relies on a particular internal function offered by modern video graphics cards that provides "feedback" from the game's display screen back to the game's engine, with its virtual environment.

Whereas in many games, you may get by using a questionable or otherwise low performance video solution, and just suffer with animation jerkiness and ragged image quality, this game will flatly IGNORE the gamer's attempts to interact with the virtual world of the game if the feedback is slower than the game engine was engineered to accept.  If the video device is bad enough, for all I know, it may affect the very first menu.

Although the included Search function within the site is extremely limited and primitive in functionality, there is a wealth of message thread archives on hand to refer to, given a better way to find the threads.  It is fairly simple to use a full-power engine such as Google with a pointer included to tell it to look for hits inside its database from this specific forum.

This particular thread is actually rather useless the way it developed, with only a very few of the people adding comments having sufficient interest in getting an answer to bother to include the basic system information.  Obviously (to me, at least), multiple causes for the same general symptom are all mixed up here in the same thread . .
