This could used in many different ways. Smaller subquests could allow you save kaiden/ashley, or wrex. Or venture back in time to try stop the Reapers during the Prothean invasion, when that fails you travel back further and one of your main missions is traveling to a primitive earth. The possiblities are endless if this were a tech uncovered for the third game. Especially if upon returning to the present each quest would alter the galactic reality of ME.
New gameplay mechanic for Mass Effect 3. Time Travel.

Or just replay ME, do it right, then play ME 2, do it right, then play ME 3 right.
And by right I mean exactly how you want to.
And any time prior to this would not have all of the resources and allies in place to fight the Reapers.

Besides, if you really wanted to time travel back 150 years or so from the period of the Mass Effect world to see what Earth looks like, you could just step outside.

I imagine a scene where you travel back in time to a point where Garrus was a 2 year old baby.
Shepard: "Hey, baby, Garrus. You're a cute widdle baby Garrus, aren't you. Wanna come talk to your uncle Shepard?"
Baby Garrus: "Can it wait a moment? I'm in the middle of some callibrations."

I wonder if the OP wishes they could go back in time and stop themselves from making this thread.
While time travel seems cool...plot holes ensue. Massive ones.
