Collegeboard released jan. SAT1 test score 3 hours ago. And boy was it an kick in the stomach. I flunked.
1870... And I well expected it to be above 2000.
I'm not an american and I can tell you that 1870 is an ******-poor score for international students.
Gotta blame TOFEL. I scored 109 at TOFEL and that made me over-optimistic.

Now I'm seriously screwed. What the heck am I supposed to tell my parents, especially I've bragged to them beforehand?.Posted Image

i have no idea where that falls. our sat is a max of 1600 and benchmark you wanted to hit at the minimum was 1000.

Uh, I don't know exactly how SAT scores work, but I got around what you have, and colleges are begging me to come to their campus. Is there a special SAT for international students?

I did so bad in GRE that probably the average college thinks that I´m retarded just by looking at the grade.

Still, it was enough to be accepted here and even Berkeley made an offer so wait and see.

You can always retake it if you need a higher score.

Sometimes you have to learn about how the test itself functions.  Sometimes you just need a little more time in school to pick up some of the extra subjects that the test covers. Now that you know how it works, you'll undoubtedly do better next time around.

I scored well on mine but I'm an incredibly bad student. My grades killed me, so I was stuck going to a open enrollment state college. Hopefully I can transfer somewhere better, but that would require me breaking a lot of very bad study habits. *sigh*  I wish it were an easy thing to do.

Not quite, but consider that our OP is competing against other international students and spaces will be limited according to college quotas (and in some cases, even specific sub-quotas for students by country such as China and India). So if he/she wants to have a better chance at enrollment especially for top-tier schools - though this doesn't always apply - every competitive edge helps. I might be generalizing, but I don't think the same pressures apply to domestic students.

OP: some colleges are actually SAT-optional, like mine was, but you may have to scrounge around and that also means your application will have to be a standout in terms of grades, curriculars and personal essay(s). Can you not  retake the test or go ahead and submit your scores and hope for the best - unless you're applying to one of the top-tier schools, in which case it may be more prudent to try again? And did you have problems in a specific category of the SAT (math, critical reading, writing)? Like Jae Onasi has said, sometimes you may need to rethink your test-taking strategies or simply practice more.

OP, can you elaborate on what the top score is for the international SAT? And the average?

I'm fairly sure the "international SAT" is the same as the local one in the US administered by the College Board. As for scoring, according to Wikipedia "possible scores range from 600 to 2400, combining test results from three 800-point sections (math, critical reading, and writing)". In other words our OP got 1870 out of 2400. I don't know about "average" score but if he/she is looking at a top-tier school with a very selective admission process (which we international students tend to do as a masochistic exercise), that will most likely count against him/her. Some websites and study preps I've seen advocate that a student should at least get 2100 or more for higher chances of admission to good schools.

I'm pretty proud of my 1874 (or something like that...). No studying what-so-ever.

Honestly? I think the greatest detriment to anyone's SAT scores is the massive amount of time the tests take. Five+ hours on my butt is absolute hell...And you HAVE to wait for the test adiminstrator to say "Ok, we can move on now." That was seriously one of the worst days of my life...

Thank God I'm Canadian... I have no idea what these numbers are supposed to mean.

I just got an A in every course I took except English... And University was fairly easy to get into with scholarships.

I did okay on my SAT's. I did not study one bit for them, though. I could have done waaay better if I had studied, probably, but I'm lazy.

I did a lot better on my ACT's though.

Again, no studying.

But it was my grades/attendance in high school that killed me Posted Image

I will only take days off if I'm sick.

...And I never get sick. Posted Image

Also, If I did just ditch, my parents would kill me.

...Probably with a pair of scissors, cuz they're HARDCORE!

That´s the great trick of US education: you get your grade somewhere else and then apply as grad student. And you´re in! Well, Fulbright behind you may help a bit, but still... :P

I took the SATs a while ago(last year after I graduated), and the highest possible score was 1600. I'm not sure how the SATs work...to be honest, each year I would skip the day we had SATs(I can't stand sitting in a room for 5+ hours in dead silence), which would explain my lack of knowledge in the area. I ended up taking it at the local college, and I believe I got a 1450 with absolutely no studying and an hour of sleep. I was not a happy camper that day to say the least.

I think they have 2 SAT test. The SAT I and the SAT II, which combined the highest possible score is 2400. *shrug*

Side note, I was also a bad kid in high school. I went to class 2-3 days a week. My teachers always told me my attendance was holding me back from having all AP classes. Fortunately I still managed to get good grades for the most part.

I'm fairly sure that was the old format in which you had only 2 sections, Verbal and Math, for 800 points each which totaled 1600 maximum when added up. They revamped the test format into Math, Writing and Critical Reading components though, so these days that means 3 sections of 800 points each equalling 2400 as a maximum score.

Nah. The SAT IIs are very different from the main SAT test, and quite optional in some cases when applying to colleges. Since you can take a different number of SAT II tests or none at all, that doesn't add up to the 2400 you're erroneously referring to. Just thought I'd correct that for the sake of preventing misinformation. :)

Yay for the bad kids Posted Image
Some days I'd actually go to school, but I'd go to another classroom and take a nap in the teacher's office, eat all their food and drank all their coffee. My teachers liked to feed me Posted Image

Eventually you´ll get to the point when they invite you to smoke very ilegal stuff. And you will never see them again the same way. :D

Ask for a Fulbright in Spain and I´ll point you towards the appropriate people. Some of the best material I have ever tried! Seems like the salaries for seasoned professors are pretty good!

Even without a Fulbright, feel free to visit. Plenty of non-professors I can consult too... I´ll just say we´re quite close to Morocco.
