While playing Mass Effect 2 my controller battery died, the unfortunate result of playing the game alot

However, the game continued shooting and using my ammo, it resulted in me dying. Should the game not pause if a connection is lost with the controller?

I was on the Justicar mission on illum, when you enter the gunship hanger but before the gunship fight.
