Mass Effect 1 and Windows 7

I am extremely frustrated with Mass Effect 1. I had been running it on a FAT32 disk in my Windows XP Pro system, but I removed it to release space for later games in the series. Then I got a bigger hard drive and upgraded to a Windows 7 system. Reinstalling worked fine for the game, but BDtS wasn't compatible with the new operating system. The initial install triggered an UAC alert, and after that, attempting to install simply aborted after I entered the CD key. I ended up reinstalling the game three times and BDtS five times before calling EA. The EA rep then told me ME 1 is not supported for Windows 7...

I'm sorry, but I'm not used to this attitude. It's the sort of thing that drives off potential paying customers.

Did you try turning off UAC when attempting to install BDtS? As well, did you run it as administrator?

I am running 64bit W7 and I had no problem with ME1, pinnacle station, or BDtS.

Make sure the game and the installer are both being run as an administrator, also turn off the crappy UAC, it is only a pain.

I upgraded happily and have not had a single problem with anything in regards to W7. *shrug*

Awesome, I am happy for you and thank you for helping Microsoft iron out any bugs before I end up getting it. :D

I have UAC set to the default setting (notify) on my Win7/64 install and I was able to install and run ME1 with BDtS and PS with no issues.

By that point, it was too late. The first aborted install apparently put the situation beyond reach.

I downloaded the EA deauthorisation tool and checked that I had ME on only two machines (the old one and the new one), but bdts still throws up when I try to install it. The only thing I can figure is that the programmers really hosed the DRM code for the DLC and nobody wants to fix it.

I have Win7x64 machine, and have no problems with any of ME1. I've found that it crashed-to-desktop less than on Vista or XP. I have UAC turned on, and have not set up administrative rights for ME1. All the DLC and the game installed correctly on the first try, so the problem can't solely rest on Win7 being the problem.

I've seen posts that indicate it's not Win 7; rather it's badly implemented DRM code. EA told me they don't support ME 1 for Win 7, and blew off my complaint.

what is UAC? I installed my ME1 on windows 7 and it said Maximum installation already.

User Account Control. The user is prompted to approve security-relevant actions, and the system monitors software installation. You find yourself installing a programme, you finish, and an alert comes up--more or less: 'Um..., I don't think the installation worked. Do you want to try again with settings I think will work?' For me, the first installation of BdtS hit that, and the second attempt then simply aborted. And like I wrote, I don't think EA wants to know...

Solution:

Download the BDtS installer a second time, and install it.

Yes, I know. Doesn't make sense that this should work, but it does. The first version of the installer that you downloaded won't work anymore because it'll cancel out every time. Actually download a second copy of the installer, and install, and it'll work fine.

It's actually the Program Compatibility Assistant that gives you that pop-up message after you install something. It's not related to UAC. Even with UAC fully disabled and you will still have the PCA bugging you after installing certain things.

You can manually disable PCA on windows 7 (Google is your friend) if it bugs you too much - in my case I turned it off the moment I started installing game mods. Anything custom will make the PCA go nuts and bombard you with pop-up messages even though nothing is wrong.

I think I tried this and it didn't work. I'll try it again and report back.

I had to nuke my Windows 7 installation and reinstall from scratch due to a problem with Parallels. I decided that I would try to reinstall BdtS as an experiment. No joy--cancelled again.

That's pretty BS. Pinnacle Station won't instal for me, either. And I'm trying to use the EADM for that one. It gets to around 50% and then boom failed. Still waiting to hear back from EA about that. I'll be very upset if I get the same answer you did, since I actually bought PS.

They finally started looking at it yesterday. They wanted a dxdiag report, and indicated they would close the issue if I didn't get it to them. So I sent it.

Don't know if that might relate to your problem. I got problems after I tried installing Pinnacle Station which always aborted and after a complete re-install I was not able to re-install Bdts at all. I finally found a solution here:

http://meforums.biow...forum=127&sp=15

the second post from the bottom somehow resolved the problem that the installation always aborted. Somehow the switching of compatibilities and switching it off again seems to work in some instances. Might be worth a try if it helps your problem.

That was strange--I ran the updater as an administrator and it worked. It hadn't before. Perhaps they fixed something in the server.

By the way, where can I buy pinnacle station? Can you purchase it with Xbox Live points?
