I liked how the new crew was written, but if I had to choose I guess I would go with the old crew. The new crew (for the most part) feels like a group professionals who are going about a job. The old crew had a kind of "unlikely heroes" vibe going for it that appealed to me.

A cop, a scientist, and some Marines are unlikely heroes...? The bounty hunter, okay, I'll give you that.

Its not just about the characters though, its about the execution of the plot. ME2 beats you to death with the suicide mission almost from the get go. ME1 was much more subtle, and you were unraveling a complex mystery with a band brought together for different reasons.

Its why meeting Sovereign for the first time kicked so much harder than ANYTHING ME2 offered.

Hearing it said that way from a story stand point opens up the mind. That is so true. In ME1 things progressed much more better than in ME2. The thing is ME2 was designed to explore the characters where in ME1, you learned the characters through the main objective. There is something to be said about learning the nuances of Character "while" facing insurmountable odds. But in ME2 the final threat is already known from the beginning as Dink has said. In ME2 you learn about the characters through "their own" missions which takes away from the refreshing part of it IMO. In ME1 for example, on your way to uncover more details on the reapers, you come across Liara's mother. This drives Liara's story much better than her coming to you before the mission saying "Hey Shep my mom is at xxx location and we got issues, can we go there?". Dink that was spot on, and now I am understanding why the characters of ME2 came across a tad bit meh, compared to the ME1 characters.

New crew >>>>>>>> Old crew

Old crew had two major flaws for me: Kaidna and Liara. Plus new crew is more diverse and better written. Especially Jack, Samara, new Garrus, Thane, LEGION.

I still say both. It's only three characters difference.

I can agree, by no means do I dislike any of the members period, but my preference lies in the old crew. There is something to be said about continuity, given why Garrus and Tali have garnered so much love. They have continuity. So when I say new crew I mean, the Jacobs, Zaeed, Samara's. Personally out of all the new characters Miranda is my favorite, but even still, If I had to choose and thank God none of us will, it would be the old crew.

EDIT: lol, DINK!

I'd say the new crew is better. The orginal crew was no where near as fleshed out. You can even see that in Garrus and Tali from ME1 to me2, how much they both grew.

Too right. When Garrus and Tali said next to nothing to me in almost the entire game in ME2 because I couldnt/wouldnt romance them, I thought to myself "boy they really have gone to town in ME2 with character development".

Same goes for Miranda and Jack. One they realise you wont let them in your pants, they constantly feed you the "busy" line.

I ment more on the lines of their quests. It gave a great look on both Tali and Garrus, and showed how and why both of them ticked. The first game didn't really show us as much of the old crew.

Speaking to Ashley or Liara beyond one or two conversations resulted in a romance. I literally had to ignore Liara in particular NOT to start her romance so I'd be single for ME2.

I do agree with this, which it makes doubly disappointing that the rest of the crew is missing.  I would love to have seen what BW would have done with the characters. :(

Edit: Jray fix your post please.

No, ME1 showed us more of what made them tick than ME2 did, it was just more tailored towards the plot. Most of what Tali and Garrus did in ME2 is built off what they spent most of ME1 telling Shepard about.

Tali's loyalty to the quarian fleet and her realtionship with her father, plus her attitude towards the geth.

Garrus and his need to bring about justice, and his absolute unwillingness to let rules and regulations tie his hands.

ME2 is merely their ME1 character development put into action, and sadly there isnt that much of it. Though I will condede Talis recruitment and loyalty missions are some of the high points of ME2.

No you didnt actually. You got two or three dialogues at most, possibly one more until you were willing to finally say there is no romance, and then you got a loyalty mission. After that they dont really contribute much. Their roles on the suicide mission are interchangeable, and not personalised in any way other than who succeeds and who fails.

The same thing happened with Ashley/Kaidan and Liara. And you didn't really get a crystal clear break-off point once it was initiated.

I think Virmire'ing Ash/kaidan was pretty clear.  And you can clearly tell Liara you aren't interested.

Except that that was the same amount you got from anyone in ME1 as well.  I can see how you have a problem, what I don't get is why you're giving ME1 a free pass on this problem which it definetely also has but ME2 gets damned by you for it.

I never got the option with Liara...I literally had to ignore her on my single playthrough to avoid the romance. :(

But seriously, ME1 and 2 had a bad case of 2-3 dialogues, then romance or jack-crap.

I would like the 2-3 "courting" dialogues, and then it branches off into either friend dialogue, or romance dialogue.

Or at the very least a LITTLE bit more dialogue before the romance.

Tali is the only LI i'm interested in, which makes Miranda and Jack...well...bland to talk to. Although I still didn't really like em that much when i did romance them.
