I liked how the new crew was written, but if I had to choose I guess I would go with the old crew. The new crew (for the most part) feels like a group professionals who are going about a job. The old crew had a kind of "unlikely heroes" vibe going for it that appealed to me.
A cop, a scientist, and some Marines are unlikely heroes...? The bounty hunter, okay, I'll give you that.
Its not just about the characters though, its about the execution of the plot. ME2 beats you to death with the suicide mission almost from the get go. ME1 was much more subtle, and you were unraveling a complex mystery with a band brought together for different reasons.
Its why meeting Sovereign for the first time kicked so much harder than ANYTHING ME2 offered.
Hearing it said that way from a story stand point opens up the mind. That is so true. In ME1 things progressed much more better than in ME2. The thing is ME2 was designed to explore the characters where in ME1, you learned the characters through the main objective. There is something to be said about learning the nuances of Character "while" facing insurmountable odds. But in ME2 the final threat is already known from the beginning as Dink has said. In ME2 you learn about the characters through "their own" missions which takes away from the refreshing part of it IMO. In ME1 for example, on your way to uncover more details on the reapers, you come across Liara's mother. This drives Liara's story much better than her coming to you before the mission saying "Hey Shep my mom is at xxx location and we got issues, can we go there?". Dink that was spot on, and now I am understanding why the characters of ME2 came across a tad bit meh, compared to the ME1 characters.
