Hey guys, first post, but I thought I'd share this, I've created a program to auto scan a planet for resourses.  I wrote it with AutoIt.  It basically moves the mouse back and forth and looks at the scanner on the right and when the white line goes higher it sends a probe.  Easy enough.

Here's a video, It's really bad quality but you get the point!

(I just uploaded it so it might not be available yet)

I have some rules before you try this app.  First, here's how to use I use it.  I do NOT know if it'll work ANY other way or in ANY other circumstances.

What operating system do I  use?
-I'm using windows XP.

What program is used to write this application?

-I wrote the program in AutoIt.  If you want to edit the program, download the program.

How do I run the game to make this work?
-I ran the game in windowed mode, at 800x600.  Because it was easier to edit the program that way.
-I moved the window of the game to the top left corner of the screen, THIS IS IMPORTANT!

How did I run the applicaion within the game?
-I have a Belkin N52TE gamepad.  This allows me to run scripts and applications while I'm in the game.  Do I know how you'll achieve this without this gamepad?  NO.  Do I care? NO!  If you really want to use this, you'll figure it out.

Do I guarantee this will work?

-Heck no, it worked for me, that's all I care about.  I included the source code so if you wanna make it work for you, be my guest.

What is included in the RAR file.
-I've include the program (.exe) and the source (.au3).

Is this program perfect?
-HECK NO!  Sometimes it'll take a planet to "Depleted," other times it'll be left at "Good".

Does it detect Element Zero?

-No, I did this on purpose.  Element Zero concentrations are generally lower than normal ones, therefore most people want to extract the most element zero as possible, so if there is element zero on a planet, you'll have to find it yourself.  Of course you will still hear the distinctive "Beep" if the scanner runs over an element zero deposit, but you'll just have to find it and send a probe yourself.

Does it screw up if there is an anomoly on the planet.
-Yes.  Find the anomoly first then run the program.

Does it sometimes freeze?
-Yes, do I care? No.  Deal with it.

Do I care that my program that I've written to work with MY SYSTEM doesn't work for YOUR SYSTEM?
-HECK NO.  Deal with it.

How to I stop this script?
-Mash the "n" key.  It's that simple.  It SHOULD stop.  If it doesn't, it'll run it's course then stop on it's own.

Is the script adjustable?
-Yes, but it involves editing it.  Download autoit then follow these steps.
-To open the source code, you might have to right click on it and click "edit."
-Really, just open the source code, change the "$bottom" variable to something higher if you want it to detect lower peaks, and something lower if you want it to decect only higher peaks.  I think it's around 340 right now, so if you wanted to detect lower peaks, change it to 350 or so, and if you want it to only detect higher peaks, change it to 330 or so.
-Then save the source code.
-Right click on the source code file, and click "compile."
-Now you have your own custom .exe.  Run that file and that's your program.

How do I use this program?
1. Start the game
2. Change it to windowed mode.
3. Change the resolution to 800x600.
4. Move the window the the top left of the screen.
5. Navigate to an unscanned planet.
6. Figure out how to run the program while you are in the game.  I use a gamepad to do this.  You could probably also use some mouse software that allows you to program it's buttons.
7. Start the scanner.
8. Hit the button to start the auto scanner application. (I use my programmed button.)
9. Sit back and watch it scan.

So, here are the files.  If you want help editing the program to work for you, ask it here.  If you want me to make it work for you, I will not.  I will also explain anything here you would like.

Alternatively, you could simply not be lazy and worthless and manually scan planets.

Dude, it's a game, calm down.  We're already lazy if we're playin it.  I have my opinions, you have yours, if you don't agree with me, don't come in the thread, easy enough.

I personally hate the plannet scanning section of the game, I'm sorry but it takes too much time.  If you feel the same as me, use the program, if not, I don't care.

And worthless?... Insults?  That's the best you can do?  B)

Its great that you had the time to create a mod that helps others. I am sure members will benefit from this mod and will save alot of time.

Its a shame you get unintelligent replys that dont help the thread at all just like Schneidend's post.

It's a test of patience and how much discomfort you can handle, nothing else. Not fun.

Thanks guys. I've tried to keep a mod updated to work for everybody before for another game, it was impossible, so I'm using a different approach this time. I've provided the source code so I'll advise you on how to edit it, but other than that I'm not going to change it at all.

Oh, and if you get it to work, please let me know, I'd love to know what systems it works on,

Alternatively, you could not be a mindless drone and realise that the planet scanning is terrible.

Your opinion.

Oh, and it seems like trying to get this program installed and working properly and smoothly would take more effort than it would to spend 10 minutes scanning a couple of planets every once in a while between missions.

It would seem like that, but I hate scanning so much, I don't care.  I'm just going to do it once at the beginning of the game then never worry about it again, so then it does save time.

Even if it doesn't save time, it does def. save your sanity.  :o  Plus it takes me about 10 minutes to scan 1 planet without the program.  Do I just really suck at it?

That's pretty awesome. I'm not going to use it, myself. I find the scanning relaxing, even if it can be annoying at times.

But good job.

Most likely I won't be using it but thank you for the effort.

Wow, well I'm not going to say you suck but if it takes you that long to do it, power to you for making the program (hell, I'd hate scanning too if it took me that long).

I timed myself and it takes me on average 2 minutes and 30 seconds to deplete a "Rich" planet.

Of course it's his opinion. Why the hell would he be writing someone elses opinion on a public forum? God, I'm getting tired of everyone going "That's, just, like, your opinion, man" as soon as someone voices an opinion. Of course it's their opinion. It's an opinion!

Most opinions have factual basis, but certain things are unquantifiable. I personally like scanning planets and hated driving around in the Mako (due to crappy controls and landscaping, otherwise it'd be fine). Others don't. No sweat.

So the OP puts in all this work FOR FREE and posts a link to share it with the community FOR FREE, and this is your response?

Interesting.  Could you please give me your physical location, and also the physical location of your family, pets and, if any exist, friends?

Fantastic idea. Currently I have Logitech G13 hooked up, but also have a Nostromo 52 TE. They don't bite each other, so I'll certainly try it out one of these days. ;)

Thanks!

I also HATED driving in the Mako.  Also, about opinions, let's drop it, it has nothing to do with the thread.  And yes, that is my opinion. :P

Nice .. if I wasn't a console player with an out of date PC that would be great. (Not intended as a platform jab or criticism of the work.)

Nice to see the community working to solve one of the few disappoints in this game.

(I don't mind some resource gathering, but after a few planets it's tedious to me.)
