Here's what I think: it strongly depends on the difficulty level. I'd say that on Hardcore and Insanity Area Reave would be much better because can hit multiple enemies with armor or barriers (think husks or even collectors), and most enemies DO have armor or barriers on those difficulty levels. However, on Veteran Heavy Reave is arguably better, because armored enemies tend to be far from one another, and Improved Shockwave works wonders against large groups of unarmored ones (again, think Husks and Collector Drones), making the CC aspect of Area Reave a bit redundant. So, on Veteran you'd probably be better of with the increased damage that Heavy Reave offers (60 against health, 120 against armor or barriers).

Any objections/suggestions?

It's probably the biggest cause of respecs for me. Heavy Reave hits so hard and is brutal against single targets. But generally where you meet Harbringers and Preatorians you also meet Husks and Area Reave is awesome against them.

In the end I slightly lean towards Area Reave cause it's not hard to hit 2 targets at once (enemies bunch up fairly often) plus is very useful versus Varren too which are like fast moving Husks that hit harder.

Really though they are both great and you can't go wrong with either.

Finally I most often play Engineer so single hard targets at not as dangerous as say a pack of Husks or Varren are.

Veteran is easy, so just build for Insanity.

Area Reave almost always.

Reave is much like Overload or Energy Drain in the sense that they hit whatever you point at.

Unlike overload however, it doesn't have an AoE unless you use area reave, making it difficult to hit enemies around boxes.

I prefer Area Reave, if you take Samara and give her Area Reave too, you can remove barriers/armor from foes really quick!

I don't like Insanity.

Come to think of it, I don't even like Hardcore.

The problem with those levels is that. although Bioware did take a few steps in the right direction, in the end it resorted to the old 'let's raise their stats' strategy. If they simple gave the enemies better combat strategies and made them use their powers more intelligently, that would be excellent. But they also gave additional shield/armor to almost every enemy in the game, which sounds absurd. I don't buy the idea that every downtrodden mercenary or husk in this game is fully armored, especially given the fact that Shepard and his team do not, in fact, have armor. I mean, they wear it, but there is no additional armor bar.

So, I prefer Veteran. It makes more sense that way.
