Since it is a multi branch story, no romance should be shoe horned into tragic, bittersweet, or happy. There should be at least two endins, one bad/nuetral and one happy.
Ah, but isn't it also shoehorning to put endings into the categories of bad/neutral and happy?
I disagree about that. It should fit within the framework of the story. The Morrigan romance arc ended exactly as it should have, was completely in character, and made perfect sense in context with her behaviour throughout the game. Sure, she is vulnerable and afraid of falling in love (and she sees it as a weakness) but she's also somewhat right in thinking that because emotions are only going to prevent her from achieving her goals. So really, the only logical end here is that she leaves, because it makes sense according to her personality, goals, and values.
If the game allowed for the possibility of Morrigan abandoning her plans for the PC, it would have made the arc a lot less profound and her character flat. As a result, I think that even allowing for the possibility of a fairy-tale ending (for lack of a better term) would be silly.
Yeah, there should be choice (choice is what makes RPG's great), but those choices have to make sense within the framework of the story. You don't have the choice to aid the darkspawn into taking over the world because it would be stupid and there is really no practical reason to help them. What would you stand to gain from helping the darkspawn, for example?
For instance, a female PC has the choice to be with Alistair, but only if she does the Ritual. This makes the player earn the ending they want, and it presents some interesting consequences. It forces them to actually think because there's pros and cons with both solutions.
