It is easy to argue that Mass Effect 2 (ME2) has greater weapon diversity than Mass Effect (ME1). ME1 weapons had statistics showing the difference between damage, shots before overheat, and accuracy. In the end though all the weapons were the same with some difference between the 3 stats (at quality level X), even though most just used the HMW (unless you wanted the most power and just used Rosenkov).
ME2's weapons, however, have different characteristics. For example let us look at the assault rifles/light machine guns. The Geth Pulse rifle (GPR) tears through barriers and shields with ease, but does not penetrate armor well and is acquired only by running Haelstrom in Hardcore or higher. Similar to the GPR, the Collector's rifle rips through kinetic barriers well, but it is acquired through purchasing the Collector's Edition of ME2 and is available after Freedom's Progress. The Vindicator rifle is the most damaging of the bunch, but has a limited ammo capacity.
The problem I have with most of the weapons in the game is that they are, for lack of a better word, crap. Elkoss Combine manufactures the Avenger and Shuriken, while Elanus Risk Control (ERC) make the Vindicator and Predator. These two manufactures are arguably the worst (as seen in ME1). Shotguns have it a little easier with the Katana and Scimitar made by Ariake Technology and the Eviscerator made by newcomer Lieberschaft (taken from the description starting "The Lieberschaft 2180 shotgun...").
The real question: Why is not the starting equipment made by Cerberus Skunkworks? Where's Kassa Fabrication? Armax Arsenal? Lem, a poor Quarian, from Mass Effect: Ascension carried an Armax Arsenal shotgun.
Hopefully in future DLC, we will see weapons of these makes. Maybe even Jormangund Technology.
Also does anyone else feel the Viper is not real Rosenkov Materials sniper rifle? When I think Rosenkov, I think powerful.
