BTW, why is it that my Paragon MaleShep didn't get the Paramour achievement by staying true to Liara in ME2? What kind of message does THAT send?
I totally agree, Bioware is promoting cheating

Um, it's sending the message that the achievement's text is
Successfully pursue a relationship with a teammate

Well, on second thought, let me be a little more charitable: all of them but Miranda's demand a lot of imaginative "filling in the blanks" on the viewer's part. Some people mind this less than others, and will enjoy the romances more.

But Jack's looks incredibly stupid because it ends with Shep and Jack lying there next to each other fully clothed. (I'd hardly call Jack fully clothed, but whatever). It's possible they only kissed, but it just doesn't look right.

Personally, I thought the Tali romance dialogue was believable if you played the first game. I've seen people say that it's "****ty" because she goes from liking you to wanting to do you, but I think she has liked Shepard for a really long time but has just been afraid to mention her feelings because he's human. Also, the "feeling your skin on mine" comment could be taken wrong, because while humans can get naked with anybody anytime, for a Quarian it's an extreme gesture of trust and caring because they are risking their life to do so.
Edit: "sl-tty" is a bad word now? huh

Tali first, because Bioware made it so damn tastefully and captured the whole emotions behind Tali letting someone see her face for the first time. I was sincerely blown away that Bioware would actually hide her face; I thought they were going to take a low blow and let you see what she looked like.
Then Garrus, just because you can tell from there that you haven't nearly gotten into the romance yet, and it's far from being love. It's exciting because it's two people, thrust together and gradually transitioning from being just good friends to casual sex and then hinting just at the end that it might become something more.

I've heard mixed opinions on the Garrus relationship, but my friends said it was pretty cool. Haven't gotten to try it yet: only gone through the game once so far!

I disagree about the Garrus romance. It definitely isn't casual sex, but if I went into detail I'd just derail the topic so I'm going to leave it at that.

Tali? Really? I personally found it a little childish... like something I expected from highschool or something. Don't get me wrong, I really liked her character. My disappointment comes from the fact that they said in developement that she was gonna be "more mature", but it didn't come across to me in the romance plot.
I never tried Jack's, but have heard it's not what you'd expect(in a good way).
Miranda is the best in my opinion, I personally like the strength her character projects, though there is an all too human vulnerability and need to be accepted there... not for who she was designed to be, but who she really is. I think that's something that people can relate too, as we're always under pressure to excel from society, be it in our appearance, work, school, wealth, ect. She just wants to be cared about for her. I really liked the depth of character, reminded me of a certain drow in Baldur's Gate 2.

There was nothing romantic about Miranda's scene. It was hot sex in the engine room. It left little to the imagination, its true. It was also kinda tacky, considering it was between the two people on the ship with private cabins.
I'm old fashioned. I like romance in my romances.

I thought the romantic progressions (or lack thereof) in ME2 was really rather awful, and the "love" scenes were either cringe-worthy or ridiculous. I thought Jacob's scene progressed like a particularly bad porno, and when you couple it with female Shep's tone and lecherous facial expressions (and that long look that started at his crotch) it was just awful. Miranda's scene was ridiculous to me. On the grated floor of the engineering room. Okay, painful. And...this is the only time there is no one in there working?
Thane's scene was innocuous, and Tali was cute (though the fact that she's risking her LIFE is a bit of a downer) but neither relationship had any depth whatsoever. Jack's progression and scene had, perhaps, the most depth and the least cringe, but the whole crying bit and broken psycho chick thing takes some getting used to in the middle of a video game.
Having Shep sleeping with his crazy ass stripping assistant is just...ignoble.
Epic fail on the romances in this one. Seems to me like they were tacked on just for form's sake. Hard to take any of them seriously, and I'm surely not vested in any of them at all.

I agree. After the tasteful and emotional romance scene in ME1 both DA:O and ME2 scenes feel, at the best of times comical, and at the worst of times sleazy.
I thought Tali's was well done and in character, but it didn't have that same emotion and passion that the ME1 scenes had.
I realize BW took a lot of, completely unfounded, flack for their ME1 love scene, but DA and ME2 are both just giant steps backwards.

I really didn't think it was possible for them to go backwards on the romances from ME1 to ME2 but they managed to do just that. This franchise has a bit of difficulty selling the romances in general because of the way the squad interaction system works: no banter; no talk off ship; no teammate-initiated conversations. It's hard to make the relationships feel integrated when a game is missing all of that. But in ME1, they managed to integrate the relationships with the story as much as was feasible within the game structure: it seemed as if the romance was progressing because of shared experiences happening in plot. The ultimate sex scene was mature and tasteful.
I don't know what happened in ME2, or how we went back to toonverse. My female Shep laying on the bed with Thane in his full get-up, with the collar of his jacket hitting me in the cheek is just too juvenile for words.

I totally agree on the selling of the romances. That is one thing DA:O did a much better job of (including just selling the characters in general) right up until you hit the "sexy time", then it was rather hideous to watch.

Tali - This was just charming and touching. A young girl with a two-year crush wanting a relationship with someone she doesn't believe could possible see her for herself because of the barriers between them. More than any other romance, this one had enormous obstacles to overcome and barriers, both physical and mental, to deal with. And it was handled expertly. It was the only romance I felt was truly "romantic" and uplifting.
Thane - The romance with Thane for the FemShep's was intense. For one, you know right from the start he's dying. You fall in love with a dying man and you really only have a few short months to spend with him. And he feels and knows that to. The way he breaks down in fear, frustration, and anger when you're last with him is powerful. He was ready for death, and you made him want to cling to life. "Be alive with me tonight..." is possibly my favorite line in the game.
Garrus - Garrus's romance is awkward and funny throughout the courtship. It seems purely "physical" when you start. Just to "work off stress". It's crazy. But... the more the "moment" draws nearer, the more Garrus's true feelings come out. "You may be the only friend I have left in this whole damn galaxy..." and "I just... want things to go right for once... just once." Almost more than anybody else, he was your friend that was put through emotional and physical hell, and you're his last shred of sanity, which makes him value you above all others. Touching.
Jack - Paragon is touching. She finally (finally) opens up to you. You can't even see that side of her unless you romance her. She crumbles before you and becomes the "scared little girl" she thought she grew out of. While her crying the entire time was emotion... my only issue is it was a tad unnerving.
Jacob - Geez, that dude should keep his shirt on. No woman could resist jumping that.
Miranda - While I like Miranda... her romance was just hilariously bad porn. Despite the fact BOTH of them have two-person beds, she decides to do you in the engine room... a mere 10 feet away from Tali, right over Jack, and in a room where Mordin, Jacob, and a dozen other folks can just glance out the windows and see them knocking boots. She's gotta be an exhibitionist.
Kelly - Er, yeah. Kelly, the pan-sexual of the the ME universe. She expresses an interest in practically everybody and for all we know has slept with everybody as well. How else do you think that "Varren STD" got onboard? Nice dance though...
