First impression of Zaeed pistol-whipping some helpless batarian was 'Oh, so this is a 2-dimensional soulless thug stereotype tagged on as an extra.' This was reinforced by the lack of any of the usual dialogue trees. First impression was wrong.
After running a few missions with Zaeed, realised that this was just as interesting a character as the others, if not more so. The loyalty mission gives you the backstory without having to engage in idle chatter. And, as others have pointed out, this character seems to have much more in-mission commentary than the others, and it's often pretty amusing.
Like on the convict mission when the warden refers to mercenaries as unreliable, Zaeed chips in with "You picked the wrong mercenaries". The absence of the standard on-ship dialogue trees starts to make sense too - this is not really the kind of person you walk up to and ask 'So tell me, how are you feeling?' . (Ans: 'Shut it, you goddam ponce!')
Also personally find Inferno Grenades really helpful for taking down armoured groups - even took it as a bonus on my Vanguard.
