The least he needs is to be given either an assault rifle or the biotic charge power to be even halfway useful. Maybe then people will want to use him and build up familiarity through combat with him.

I liked the fact he saluted. Frankly, I'd have everyone saluting most of my Shepards except maybe Mordin. This isn't a vacation cruise and I want people in the "when Shepard says jump I'm in the air before I even think about it". (And forcing Miranda to salute would be one of the first things I would do.)

But yes, as others have said, he's one of the most stable, sane, and normal squadmates you have. Which adds up to make him a little uninteresting. Probably doesn't help that he's no so great in combat; if he still could rock Assault Rifles like in ME: Galaxy, it might help him some.
Even his loyalty mission feels a little weak in developing the character. He doesn't participate much until the end (except to say what's going on is messed up, which anyone can say. In fact, your other squadmate DOES say that.) It's a story that has Jacob's connection added to it, instead of a story about Jacob.

That's a non-argument. Jacob definitely has his own opinions and a unique perspective on the game's situations.Big Yam wrote...
Jacob is devoid of any personality. All he does is agree with and accomodate your character. He doesn't bring any new ideas or new perspectives to the table. That makes him a non-entity.

Nah, I'm kidding, he's a good guy, I'd go for a few drinks with him but... I don't know... he's a friend, but he's not exciting... oh god... I want a bad boy >_
I feel dirty now.
But come on... Thane is an cold blooded killer (Drell are cold blooded, right?)... Garrus is driven mostly by rage and bitterness... they really are the bad boy options, aren't they?
-EDIT-
Oh hey, it doesn't censor wanker... Bioware, you have some really interesting language filters.

Well, I'm sure he does. But not in a way that is unexpected or conflicting with other character's or my own views in any significant way, which makes him bland, IMO.

More mammalian than that. Warm-blooded. Live birth.

I don't mind Jacob but he tries too hard with his battle cry.

I think Jake's line is one of the better ones. Garrus's "One less to worry 'bout!" and Zaeed's "Heh, heh ...that was pretty."

Seeing this scene, it occured to me that while pecs are really, really nice, I was more focused on how his neck wasn't seemlessly attached to his body. The lighting really threw me off.

It's funny, I was just thinking this is why Miranda's costume has a little choker.

Possibly. I'll try and get a screenshot similar to yours to compare them. But that one I picked because it showed it the most clearly.Skilled Seeker wrote...
Mind you in the picture I posted with femshep and Jacob huddled together the neckline is not visible. Maybe it has to do with your graphics settings?
Edit: Right, got a shot. Clicky. Doesn't look anywhere near as obvious there. Still noticable if you look closely above the sternum.

That aside, I don't see myself as having an issue with him while playing a male character. He's just bland and the saluting is a bit much. I like his straight-forwardness and mutual distrust/dislike of Cerberus.
