I didn't mind Jacob. He was better than the gay guy in ME1 with the poor attitude but was still replacing him as the attitude guy. "Shepard, I really don't like pushing these talks". I wish there was a Punch-You-In-The-Face key.

You know, I really don't want to be "that guy" and I absolutely love the depth and attention that Bioware invests when creating these characters; mostly all well thought out. That said, please take my comments with a grain of salt and the understanding that I have only completed a male shep play through.

As a young black man, I was elated to discover that Jacob's character had been included because we are just now getting to a point where ethnicity is both celebrated and included in the virtual world. His character wasn't an overly used clichéd racial stereotype (Cole Train - Gears of War, Bbasically all of the GTA characters, even Sazh Katzroy - FFXIII) , but more of a soldier. Now initially I was a little apprehensive about some of his facial features and that he almost looked more like a caricature than an actual person. Then i hit the boards and I hear about the femshep playthroughs were it seems like his dialogue is completely centered around flirting (aka sex), another stereotype that almost turned me off.

But I chilled out and eventually stopped negatively psychoanalyzing his character. Jacob's just like any other soldier; 1) sometimes morally conflicted about whether or not he's on right side or doing the right thing, 2) has the personality to remind you that he's not a biotic freak of nature or krogan test tube baby, he's a person & 3) I'm sure nobody created an ugly femshep (at least on purpose) and by golly, soldiers do like to screw.

I loved him and always kept him in my party for his pull field. Yeah, he lacked some of the great dialogue that others had (unsure about a femshep play through), but I was sure as hell excited to spill some drinks on the citadel and hope I get to in ME3.

P.S. The dap and bro-hug made me stop and pause for a minute, but you know what? It's realistic. Who doesn't bro-hug their friend? To me, it was about the most physical interaction b/n "friends" that I've seen. Not words of kindness, or helping an injured team mate "limp" away from a battle, but they actually embraced in a universally accepted form of physical contact more intimate than a handshake.

God, I love BW.

This is where I was coming from as well.  When he did the hug, I paused for a second, then started laughing.  It wasn't something I was expecting, but it made so much sense considering who the character was and just how far they'd come.  Heh, that wasn't something I expected Bioware to put into the game, but I thought it worked and for some reason gave me that warm "cool" feeling.  Awesome stuff.

Not really.

And you're an expert? No you're not, all of our feedback and reactions to Jacob are worth posting about so BioWare can get a feel for it for the next game and how they handle conversations, whether we all agree on it or not. So don't think you know better, you can't control how others see things and your reaction isn't the only perfect one there is.

Wow - when did I say all that? Looks like there's only 2 words in my post, I'm glad you found my secret message!

Idiot.

If it worked for you, and you were able to take a modern day context and extrapolate its relevancy in the ME universe, I completely understand and respect that. It didn't at all work for me. I didn't dislike the character per se; I didn't think he was a poor representation of a black person of today per se; I thought he was misplaced, and outside of any established cultural context so that things that weren't necessarily offensive seemed to me to be a caricature, and I wondered what Bioware was trying to accomplish. It brought to mind to me what I've often seen happen in corporate america where people tend to think they have to "act black" -- whatever that is supposed to mean -- to somehow relate to a person who is black. That there is some special behavioral patterns that have to be adopted to relate to (or represent) a "cool" black person.

In any event, I found it jarring. But that was just my reaction. I certainly understand if it worked for you based on your modern military experience.

Well, think about this.  How many black folks say the same thing about being "black"?  I've heard so many people (and even members of my family) talk about "blackness".  What is that exactly?  They say someone isn't "black enough" or they say that someone is "too black".  If black folks themselves can't figure it out, then I surely wouldnn't expect someone who isn't black to know, either, which is why I cut people a lot of slack on some of these things.  Now, in the case of Gears of War, I can't stand that portrayal of black people.  It's annoying and really gives people the wrong impression, even with a name like Cole Train.  Ugh.  Or Barret in FFVII with his swearing and lack of education.  I like to see good portrayals of black people like Jacob, who are smart, don't take crap, but don't have a bunch of mental issues.  It's boring from a story point of view, because baggage creates drama, but I like the idea they were trying to get across.

I thought he was boring.

He was like Kaidan, he could handle everything himself and he didn't really need you on an emotional level. That's fine, but since great character relationships are built upon the exchange of emotions he just felt flat to me. Also standoffish.

that's exactly how I feel about him. My femShep was willing to give him a chance.. but he was soooo.... hmm... uncooperative?

I liked his loyalty mission more than I like him.

I agree with this.

Personally, I found Jacob rather dull.  However, I might have found him more interesting if the conversation options between him and FemShep weren't forced-flirty to the point of making my skin crawl.  I did not enjoy talking to the guy most of the time, so I probably missed out on quite a bit of in-game goodness related to him.

That said, what I did get just struck me as meh.  And, as I've said elsewhere, it's not because he's a nice guy.  It's because he wasn't nice-and-intriguing.

He started out ok but as the story went on he turned into a big whiner and complainer so no I don't care if he is in ME3, and yes his loyality mission was better than his personality.

Yeah, Jacob is somewhat colorless as a character (no pun intended). He is a nice guy and has a devil as his father, but he copes with it quite well, thats about it.

A deep character needs a deep conflict, something like Samara, Jack, Tali, Thane.

ME2 Sub Plot: Daddy issues. Miranda is running from tyrant fanatical dad. Jacob's dad turns out to be an a hole, and tries to make himself a king. Tali's dad is making geth and we find out he dies. Thane is a dad, but his son and him have some serious bonding to do.

I think it's just an ME thing.  I mean, Ash had some serious daddy issues in ME1.

Anyway, Jacob was one of my favorite characters, and that was largely because he just seemed like a regular guy.  It gets a bit annoying when everyone you meet has these serious issues that basically define their entire character.  Yeah, people have issues IRL, but not everyone has issues all the time, and for most people their whole persona doesn't revolve around some unresolved issue from the past.

I did, however, hate Jacob's loyalty mission.  But that's because I hate Heart of Darkness, and as soon as I got a bit into it, all I could think was "Seriously, Bioware...Heart of Darkness?  Really?"

Jacob was bland and too much of the stereotypical "military guy" to me. He loosens up a bit after you finish his loyalty mission, but then he doesn't say as much after that. Maybe he's a better character if you're playing female Shepard and trying to romance him, but in my first playthrough I was pretty underwhelmed by him. All of the human characters in the crew except Jack kind of annoy me in the game, and even she isn't one of my favorites. Bioware seems to do the most work developing the aliens' personalities in my opinon, and to me they always seem like the more interesting characters.

Jacob was definatley ME2's Kaidan and thus I liked him, a very likeable and loyal comrade.

Don't think he's that bad of a character. But as a femshep, the VO when just wanting to talk to him is so horrid it just made me go "Okaaayyyy, no more of that ktnx." Femshep just gave this "I wanna hump your leg" vibe and sadly Jacob has to pay for it. I just never bothered even talking to him again after that.
