I'm lvl 8 and only at Redcliff, but come on does the loot get better.  None of the chests I open with my rogue or merchants have anything to sell that's any good.   A ton of repeating loot is getting ridiculous...I dont need studded gloves, daggers, etc.... over and over again.  Playing as the rogue so far to open chests hasn't been meaningfull...

Is the loot scaled by the difficulty you play by chance?

What difficulty are you playing on? Because I'm playing on normal and the chests and the drops SUCK. My rogue got a lvl while in Redcliffe castle - and I got her to Lvl 3 Lock Picking so I could get into this armory in the castle - and it was garbage. All of the armor was not as good as what I already had, and except for one 2-handed weapon, everything else was terrible too.

It picks up a little bit but I haven't seen anything crazy good.

The value over the happiness you feel over finding good loot is compared to its rarity.

Sorry for the wow reference but... taking that as an example consider the first epics in vanilla wow. How extremely glad you got over those. Compared to how glad you became over epics in WOTLK. "yay ... another epic... great..." /sarcasm.

RARE LOOT placed at logical places and found on hard to kill bosses = Good.

Epics everywhere all over all the time = Apathetic view on gear and removes challenge.

The loot is generally good enough for a little coin, but the really good pieces are accuired either through quests or a few specific loots.

Truly, the loot in this game is underwhelming to the point where I want there to be a word like "abysmal-whelming" or something (I'll call Webster). And yes, the chests suck. They really suck.

On my first visit to Redcliffe I found a chest I couldn't unlock with level 2 lockpicking and I was rather excited when I returned to check it out later on. It contained a bowl (not even a gift) worth all of 12 silver. Glee.

The early game is very "low magic" in regards to itemization, but the mid and late game are full of magical stuff at every other turn. Early on, the only notable items you are going to access are through DLC or vendors. Pretty much every vendor has good magical items.

I'm disappointed with the way the loot table is designed as it doesn't seem to ramp up very well. It's also a shame that some of the best items are sold by vendors at very high prices. After looting about 1k useless items it's tempting to use the console and give yourself enough gold to buy something nice from a vendor.

The loot table is indeed horrible, it actually gets "worse" in terms of enemies scaling up, but 99% of drops are trash that will fill up your limited inventory anyway.

Chest lock picking is beyond worthless at least in my experience. Vendors however do sell uniques/rares at very high prices.

You can get some nice rings, staffs, belts from vendors later in the game, but be prepared to spend 150 gold

By the time you're in the upper teens you get better (i.e. valuable) drops, but by then you should have some unique sets you're using anyway.

If you don't pile up enough gold to buy the top loot, though, you're overusing potions.

70% of the best loot in the game is quest related, the other 25% on the vendors, the other 5% I haven't found yet.

I look at it this way, i get xp from unlocking a chest, I get sellable items from chest which adds up to the money I need to buy them uber gear. The dagger in Oz cost me 148 gp already.

That certainly works, but I find my inventory fills up way too fast, thankfully I paid $7 for an item chest

Loot is fine, it's a balancing act between not rewarding the player and making things too easy. Sell the loot and buy things wisely. Yes, there are good items too, but they are rare using the dictionary definition of the word, not the WoW sense.

Why would you carry stuff to a box and drop it in, when you can carry the stuff directly to a merchant and turn it into cash?

I'm happy to open any chest and get something to sell from it. Every little bit helps, especially considering how expensive the good vendor items are. I look at Lockpicking the same way I do Stealing: an additional source of experience and money.

To overcome the mass disappointment of looting all the precious toiletries in the chest(of which I wasted precious skill points for my rogues, even 4th level lock piking and still couldn't pick  the towers chests)  I justify the console money cheat to reward myself and purchase from the vendors what I thought would have been an adequate compensation for all the effort thusfar... I do not feel the least bit guilty and its payback for the bilking by AE for their marketing scam with overpriced  DLC and poor quality content thus far of said same.  1 hour or less for Stone's misadventure which shold have been included with the "regular" game, and Wardens lack luster treats, both  which where extremely short quests.

I made the mistake of purchasing the $20 point package from AE store and now have to see what else my money wont get for the other DLC that is produced.

Lesson  learned (maybe) .......don't prebuy unless highly recommended from intelligent sources!!

If the game constantly gives you powerful or valuable loot, then it becomes too easy or you end up with a ton of useless cash (since you would have bought everything you needed). If we limit the number of lootable corpses and chests then you might feel there's just not enough loot!

We made DA to give you a large number of loots so you can gather a nice collection of things to use or sell, but the power and value has to be kept down so the game remains a challenge and buying items involves important choices. The special items must be rare enough to feel special otherwise they just get lost in the crow and having chests that contain generic stuff make the ones that contain special stuff all the more special.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of a loot system do you think would make the game more enjoyable and satisfying? I'm sure the feedback could come in useful for future development.

It definitely gets better. In my first run through I was surprised that I seemed to get things when I needed them, but not too early, which was great.

DON'T CHANGE IT AT ALL!

You confirmed my suspicion that the looting system was intentionally designed like it is: Not a lot of awesome items laying around, which makes the ones you do find that much more special - and you don't end up with either a lot of useless/duplicate items and/or a load of useless cash laying around.

I don't hear anyone complaining that they couldn't win the game because they didn't get enough/better loot drops. How exactly would more/better loot drops improve the game?

No word on loot scaling? I feel like hard mode gives much better loot in terms of monetary value? The Redcliffe (raider things) dropped only a few maces on Normal mode, but on Hard they dropped several chainmails which sold for some sovereigns. Or am I imagining things?

I think maybe there is not enough loot for rogues and mages, maybe too difficult to find a set of matching armor at higher levels, and not enough variety of things dropping in general that actually make you have to study and make decisions.

I really liked how satisfying it was when you found good gear in this game.  If I was to complain, it would be about the price of mid-range gear.  I do like having to save for a quite some time to get a few serious pieces of gear, but because of this, I never wanted to buy anything aside frorm the 80+ gold items.  The cost of higher-tier non-magical items and lower-tier magical items seemed too high, so I never really bought any gear better than I found that wasn't a top tier magical item (the exception being a couple talent tomes).

Maybe you should wake the Arl up out of him coma and tell him that his armory is full of junk not worth stealing.
