First a few quick things. This is not a thread meant to
discuss who is the hottest, had the hottest scene or is the most "my
type" of the three main romance options available to a male Shepard.
Instead It is meant to start a discussion of how well implemented these options
were. Not what Bioware should do or should try to do, but how well you feel
they pulled off what they did. To start I'll give my thoughts on the three
female crew members. (If someone wants to post on the FemShep options feel
free, I've just never played them so have no opinion.)

Tali: While I wasn't a big Tali fan from the first game, and was totally
fine with the fact that she wasn't a romance option, Tali was my L1 in ME 2. This
is largely because I felt that the "pre-romance" interactions between
Tali and Shepard were some of the best that Bioware has done. The girl-into a
woman transition was pretty well done, and was, by video game standards, pretty
subtle.  Tali's crush on Shepard can clearly be seen in her responses to
him, during her recruitment mission, and I liked the fact that, while the
introduced her potential as a romance option quite bluntly, it was done by
Kelly, a third party. I found this quite convincing. There are also several
moments during Tali's loyalty quests where you can clearly see the bond between
your character and hers strengthening

However once the actual “romance” dialogue came into play I felt severally let
down. While Tali’s lines were quite well written and delivered, and her
animated responses great. I felt that Shepard’s lines were clumsy and hollow,
and really ruined the atmosphere. Perhaps adding one or two more “romance”
interactions to make the transition from friend to “girlfriend” a little more
depth might prevent the culmination of the relationship from feeling a bit
tacked on.

Jack: In terms of a convincing and compelling
narrative, a cinematic experience, if you will, I felt that in many ways Jack’s
romance was the best. The dialogue was well written and her interactions with
Shepard seemed to me to be, by far, the most substantial and seemless. Her personality and
character seemed the most fully developed, and when taking the paragon route
with her, her character and the romance both develop at the same time. And
unlike characters in other games whose character you can shape (eg. DA:O), I
didn’t feel like her "alignement" was defined by any single interaction or dialogue
choice. The “checking boxes” feeling I sometimes get with NPC dialogue was absent.

Miranda: Of the three romancable female NPC’s Miranda
is the one who I feel I “know” the least. Even though I had her in my party for
a lot of the game, and followed her back-story, I think she is a little
overwhelmed when compared to characters like Tali and Jack who have such
clearly defined and strong personalities or “hooks” Jack, the abused psychopath
who can be redeemed, and Tali the exotic alien coming of age with the ME 1
connection. In this regard I would say that Miranda’s romance dialogue was very
good, but the build up to the romance was weaker than with either Tali or Jack.
Yeah Miranda put you back together and you helped her with her loyalty mission.
But in both Jack and Tali’s loyalty missions there was a much clearer sense of
bonding between Shepard and the NPC. With Miranda, the romance option kind of
seems a bit obligatory.
