I took the assault rifle.

I preferred the AR spec. The Claymore has only a single shot per clip, and even though that may pack a punch, on higher difficulties, the reloading is the difference between life and death. I personally just stuck with the Scimitar and decided to use the Avenger on occasion, mostly to deal with Husks and other similar enemies.

Go with AR or Sniper. The Geth Pulse Rifle, Vindicator, Mantis, and Viper can ruin your enemies' day. Claymore's pretty damn disgusting right after a Heavy Charge, though.

The Tempest fills the role of an AR pretty well. And really, I've found in hardcore at least that the Vanguard is at his best when played like a Vanguard - hyper-aggressive, charge > melee > shotgun to the face. Heavy Charge is really clutch, as it approximates the Soldier's Adrenaline Rush pretty well. Charging Harbingers has actually worked out pretty well for me.



So yeah, Claymore in my opinion.

Vindicator.



Use the new DLC shotgun, Eviscerator, instead of getting the Claymore. Use the Vindicator when you need some accurate ranged fire.



That is my opinion, at least. You should really just try them both out and see what you like better.
