I don't get how you guys can say Scions are no big deal, they're ridiculous. They have armor thats seriously resilient even with flame ammo/hand cannon, they lurk towards you and you have to storm perpendicular from their biotic thing and if it hits you it stuns you and the other collectors/husks eat you alive. they're so annoying, i'd rather fight 2 praetorians at once than those stupid things.

I guess it depends on your class. I'm an Engineer so I can lock down any Scions that show up with a combat drone. I find Harbinger to be much more annoying since his biotic spam can easily kill you when combined with supporting fire from Collector drones and assasins.

I'm also surprised by the number of people who had trouble with Garrus's recruitment mission. That was easy for me. Grunts was much harder.

Grunt's mission was easy for me.  You just have to realize that there are indeed a finite amount of krogan on the last part, so you can focus wholly on them at first as that chick just sits back and the mech just dances in the middle.

Oh the last battle was easy. Getting to it was a pain.

Many factors come into play for this one. I prefer long range attrition combat so anything that involves numerous rushers with supporting fire or sparse cover decimates me.

The First difficult encounter was Garrus' recruitment mission where you had to seal the lower tunnels and the initial Blood Pack attack after sealing said lower tunnels. I probably made this more difficult on my self by having a squad member assist Garrus while I went below.

The Second came from the double Scion fight at the end of Horizon. Avoiding roving bands of husks is easy-peasy when they are alone, but combined with the double-blammy Shockwave Scion gun and it was an absolute slaughter of me and my team.

The Third came from the Collector Ship ambush scene. Surviving that one mostly came down to being lucky on some of the Harbinger spawns.

Those would be the toughest fights I have faced so far, I have not yet taken on the Omega 4 Base on my Insanity run. There have been numerous other difficult and rewarding battles that didn't require me reloading 15+ times, just 3+ times.

Any fight involving multiple Geth Hunters since squadmates don't shoot cloaked enemies. The infinite husk swarm at the Mass Effect Core in the Derelict Reaper. The Colossus battle on Haestrom; the Colossus was easy, it was all the other Geth and that blasted sun radiation that posed trouble. The extended battle run up to catch Vido for Zaeed's loyalty. The extended battle run up to reach Okeer for Grunt's recruitment.

I think we all can agree that Insanity is a pain in the ass. However, there will always be that battle that just pisses you off the most. What would that battle be?

For me, I would have to say the Collossus fight while recruiting Tali would be the hardest so far. I was playing on my Engineer with Miranda and Garrus (Three overloads, you would think it would be easy right?). I made sure my squad was in place and was very precise when to use my powers. Yet it still took me an hour and a half of constantly reloading the damn fight and constantly hearing "We don't have enough people on our side for you to take one for the team. Get down!" I never felt so relieved when I finally managed to down the bloody thing. >.<

1. Insanity was easy

2. didnt have much trouble with the Tali fight, but I got hell of lucky. By all rights I should have died five times, yet miraculously made it to cover.

3. Hardest fight for me was when you are on the platforms on the collector ship. My ****** teammates tried to catch the bullets with their faces. Regardless, after about an hour of frustration I found a tactic that works and have not had trouble since.

That ****ing quarian rescue mission. I didn't go out of my way to sidequest on insanity, but I did any that came my way. This one was annoying. The quarian kept dying, because quarians are all awful. Anyway, luckily, it was short, so you either succeeded or failed quickly.

Other than that... I dunno. Some fights were harder than others, but I don't think any were too bad. I was kind of surprised. I almost never play games on increased difficulty settings and usually play them on easy/very easy/insultingly easy/whatever, but this wasn't that bad at all. The fight during the biotic barrier section of the suicide mission with all the husks and a scion had to be ended quickly, though, because there was nowhere to run away like a coward and hide.

Tali's recruit mission, by far. Horizon was second, so annoying till I learned to sprint-kite the husks around the two scions while burning them down.

EDIT: NEVERMIND.  What the guy above me said.  That freakin' quarian rescue!!! It almost cost me my insanity achievement because I didn't think I would be able to do it.  I did eventually beat it, after some 20 reloads.

The collector ship.

The ambush segment pissed me off. My squad kept eating the scions shockwaves and harbinger kept pushing me out of cover.

Seriously. Im ok with his biotic spam, but that dark ball that knocks you out of cover? Not cool man.

Are there really any strategies for the Collector Ship ambush? If you take cover from the Scions, Harbinger takes you out of cover. If you try and take out Harbinger, Scions kill you with their shockwave and Harbinger will just possess a new drone. You try and maneuver around, and you get shredded by drone bullets.

I played through on Insanity (Level 1 female sentinel) first play through (that is,  so now i never  have to play this travesty again, except maybe on super easy for the lulz @ dialogue (which i like immensely, pity it was wasted on this game)).  In my opinion there were some serious balancing issues that came about due to the fact that Bioware simply don't know how to make a First person shooter.  To me, this was no longer an rpg, and I simply did not have the luxury to maneuvre as I would in a normal shooter.  In my experience, a lot of these "tough" battle, were only tough because of exceptionally poor game design.  I wonder if they bothered getting playtesters in(???).  My vision may be a little skewed because of an bug that caused the game to crash 100 times (including 30 times at the final boss, until i figured out what was causing the crash i.e. i stopped using weapon on it :P).

Most of my initial battles involved Miranda+Jacob.  After I helped Mordin+Tali I used them for the remainder.  Tali's combat Probe distracting the enemy got me out of a lot of tough situations.

Issue one:
Infinitely respawning enemies ARE NOT FUN.  This is lazy and unimaginitive.

Issue two:
Not getting experience from enemies=not an rpg.

Issue three:
Some story advancements relied on simply making it to an area, clicking, no matter how
(inconsistent).  T

Issue four:
All enemies being of equal difficulty meant I fought the precise same mission 40 times. Dull and unimaginitive.

Issue five:
SOme of the level design was poor.  I shouldn't have to struggle to see where I am able to walk and not walk, and this comes down to the game trying to be a FPS without the luxury of a good aiming system.

issue six (unrelated):
Pretending  a game isn't linear, but making all boring mission pieces necessary for survival doesn't fool me.  Why wasn't I allowed to enter the Omega-4 relay at the start?  My ship right?

Anyway, onto the battles:
Here are some examples of some battles that were what i considered BS, but could be done once you figured out the cheap tactic.

Help Zaeed
At the end there are some infinite respawning guys(as well as the start and middle -.-), and a YMIR Mech.
I couldn't figure out how to stop making those infinite respawners stop.

Solution: Avoid gunfire (which is very unlikely on Insanity, lol) and get the YMIR to activate.  The bridge across the gap will open.  Run past the YMIR Mech and activate the door.

Help Tali
Same deal, I ran past the infinitely respawning geth troops

Get the REaper IFF
At some point you fight through a heap of scions, husks and abominations.  I ran through this whole area, until i hit the door that was needed to bypass.  Fortunately thre was an autosave point (in the middle of battle o.O wtf) just before that door.  And i respawned there.  When I did, I ran back to the start (a way to kill husks with sentinel is to continually run backwards while firing)
Wasn't hard - just long and boring.

Save Tali-Colossus
I played through this 20 times or more.  It was the first big essential battle where infinite respawners played a big part.  Eventually snuck up on the right (had already done this 100 times) and at one point the colossus got bugged and just stood there (there were stil geth) So I managed to finished it off.
Complete BS that the instant the Colossus died, all geth disappeared.

Destroy the infected mech base(side "quest")
In the factory, once I had cleared the upper section, it was simply a matter of running past a group of loki mechs, and I could activate the conversation switch.  I spent 30minskilling those infinite respawners previously.  This was the first mission where I got angry at the sheer laziness of level design.

Collector base - protect the tech engineer
Having a time limit, trying to run past Harbinger with a bunch of unnecessary boxes in my way?  Fail.
I ran past as many collectors as I could - getting to the fourth was okay.  Fortunately someone in the level design realised "maybethey don't like repeating the same experience in the same area fifty times) and made them easier

Help Garrus
Two YMIR MEchs?
WTF was the point.
So I hide behind some boxes and spam warp for 15minutes.

And now for some battles that were difficult but doable:

Praetorian
Uninventive enemy design, but still requird skill of when to duck, when to run etc.

Collector ship trap (like we didn't see it coming)
The Scions were bugged, fortunately.  So this did not cause me much problem.  Maneuvring my squad to the correct positions so they weren't toast every 5 seconds was a challenge, and I did like the moving platform dynamic.  YOu had to fight aggressively to win, which was a nice change

Reaper Core
Reminds me of the Thorian battle.  There was a bug in the husks that made this easier, which was that you could exploit the fact they didn't like crossing the stairs closest to the core.  This is poor design, and utterly ridiculous strategy, but hey it worked.

End boss
Aside from the game crashing if I shot this thing in the eye, it was possible to do it with just biotics (and the  one shot with the Cain reduced the health by only 30% lol).  Working out where to position my squad ( I found Mordin+Tali work very well) so they could kill the collectors while I concentrated on the boss.  Once you figured the pattern, there were plenty of adequate hiding places.

Okay that's it.  Be back for ME3 : P

Just half way through on insanity, but so far part of Garrus recruitment where you had to close doors. One door was just impossible to close. Took me 2 days and I was just lucky with that one.

Investigate Collector Ship

I tried playing Insanity on my first playthrough, and when I got to this point I just couldn't do it. I must have reloaded the game 30 times, and I even reloaded different squad mates to try different options. I just could not do it. I eventually had to lower the difficulty.

Now I'm on my NG+ playthough and I'm about to do it again. Hopefully I have better luck.

So far, the Collector Ship. Harbinger is such a pain to fight. I only got through the ambush by going through medigel like candy. Though the Scions and Praetorian weren't a problem at all thanks to my combat drone. Harbinger? Not so much. I can't decide which is worse; his constant biotic spam or him never shutting up.

"This hurts you." "I know you feel this." "If I have to destroy you Shepard, I will." "This hurts you." "This hurts you." "We are the Harbinger of your destiny." "The experiments will continue." "This hurts you."

Harbinger would be a lot less annoying if he would just shut up for more than 5 seconds.

...and that is exactly where I am "stuck" right now with my Vanguard on insanity. The Colluosus was pure joy and fun for me, in comparison very straight forward. I dont have enough medigel, Grunt and Mordin die in a matter of seconds no matter how I place them on the little platform, even Grunts "fortification" doesnt seem to keep him alive better than Mordin. The Harbingers close in on me and cover doesnt help much when it comes so close.

This is the first obstacle I hit on insanity, any feedback is much appreciated. Oh and I play this bit without sound, those Harbingers drive me frikking mad otherwise!

Do headshot count more damage on the Scions btw?

The Collector ship platform part is definitely the toughest. Really bad cover, which the Harbingers keep knocking you out of with their singularity. You need Medi-gel and team members that can take down barriers and armor quickly.

The Collaossus? I don't think I've ever died in that fight. You flank him to the right and take him out. What's so tough about it?

EDITS: The weak point on Scions is that glowing circle on their abdomin.

I actually found the Haestrom colossus fight quite easy and haven't died once on it on any playthrough.

Biggest pain was either the damn shutter with the varren and krogan or the 3 heavy mechs at once (though I hit that one at like lvl 8-10 with like no upgrades and crap gear which is probably why)

The Collector Ship. Mainly the first battle with the platforms, that I had to do about thirty freakin' times before I succeeded. It was my very first playthrough as well as well as my first Insanity playthrough (if can jump in at the deep end, I always do) I had Miranda and Grunt. The controller was thrown a lot.

In fact, the Collector Ship experience traumatised me so badly that I dreaded reaching that point with my FemShep, who was another Soldier playing through on Insanity.  Yet, having finished the game previously and knowing that my playstyle evolved to be built around spamming bullets with the viper sniper rifile reasonably accurately, I made sure this time I did Thane's recruitment mission before the ship.

My second time through, with Reave as a bonus skill, using the blackstorm (didn't want to use bonus items the first time through) and with the viper to hand was considerably easier. Still hard, but it only took me three goes at the platform section (focused on taking on the scions as fast as possible), and two when it came to the bastard floating tank.

I was much less pissed off at TIM for putting me into that situation the second time around.

But, yeah,I dunno. The floating platform section of the collector ship is the only battle that REALLY sticks out, but there were plenty of others I found ridiculously hard. Especially the first time through, when I wasn't picking my squad very well. Oh, I wrote an essay. Oops.

Another vote for the Geth Colossus here. It was easier on my Infiltrator (three failures) than my Adept (at least a dozen failures), but I'd say overall it was the hardest on both.

Garrus's recruitment quest specificaly the second part with the vorcha and krogan, followed by krogan alley on grunt's recruitment quest. The colossus fight WOULD have been the hardest till i realized that you can actualy kill it from the window and never spawn any geth if you do it just right.

Thanks! I will try taking the Scion out quick then, might give me some space to deal with the Harbingers, now if Harbingers had a weak spot hehe

...I just tried it out and got through this bit in the first attempt. Getting rid of that Scion made all the difference. Thanks again!

You can? It would always repair itself when I tried killing it from the window.
