Has anyone tried to get everyone to survive with the minimum number of loyal squadmates?

From developer's posts and my own best estimate, it would seem that number would be 4 if you want to save the crew, and 3 if you don't.

The key roles obviously need to have loyal squadmates. This means that you'd need:

a loyal leader for the fireteams
a loyal techie for the vents
a loyal biotic for the swarm
a loyal character for the escort

Finally, I think you need two loyal squadmates with you for them to survive the final battle.

You could potentially use your tech specialist to escort back your crew, but I think doing so would make Mordin's survival impossible, because he seems to have problems surviving even if everyone is loyal. This means that Mordin has to be loyal, and you send him back with the crew.

For the other roles, I think that Garrus makes the best choice for the fireteam leader, because he can lead the team, and because the developers imply that he's one of the best defenders, so you make him loyal, and then you leave him to hold the line.

This means that your choices for the other two roles should be the squishiest of the characters, because they'll be with you in the final battle, and you want to leave their tougher counterparts to hold the line. It seems pretty clear that Tali would be squishier than Legion, so she should be the tech specialist. However, I'm not sure who is weaker at defending out of Jack versus Samara. Jack has gone through a lot, but from a weapons perspective, assault rifles and SMGs are much better at holding down the fort than shotguns and pistols.

What do you all think? I think i remember seeing a few people finish with just 4 loyal characters. Any hints from the veterans?
