I havent read the books yet, but the lore that is described in official and the unofficial wiki do sounds interesting. Shall try to get hold of the books released so far.

The lore... how do you say... r0xx0rz my s0xx0rz. I especially like the Tevinter Imperium and the Imperial Chantry (and Nevarre with its dragon hunting traditions seems interesting too). I'm a huge fan of Romano-Byzantine history, and finally finding a setting with a well-done analog (aside from Gondor, there aren't many) makes me very happy. I also rather like their approach to religion in Thedas, making it a thing of faith instead of the typical DnD style cliches. Even the dwarves and elves are new and interesting takes on old standbyes.

All I can say is that when I get this game, I'm not going to be leaving my house for a while.

Even just reading snippets of lore and knowing that the history is there makes a big difference for my immersion in a game.

Also, this the first game that has ever made me want to play a dwarf- goodbye major stereotypes!

The lore is the foundation that the story is built upon.

Absolutely. I've really enjoyed reading David's books and the lore in the wikis and such. It just makes the Dragon Age world more interesting and immersible to me. I can't wait to play!

I care about lore a lot. This game has such great compelling lore I'm pretty sure I'll be playing this game for years to come and hope there LOTS of dlcs and or expansion packs. C'mon Bioware!

I just got The Calling today and I'm already devouring the thing. I'm also spending time at the wikia, I'm even thinking of what kind of childhood my mage had before and after she was taken to the Circle. It's all terribly exciting!

In conclusion I'm not sure an RPG can't be great without it's great lore.

Amen to that!  I want to play a Dwarf Commoner now.  The origins story seems so gritty and real.

It blends both the unique with the dark with the familiar. It's wonderful. I really admire the writers for creating this whole new world. It's just incredible to read about. The antivans are probably my favourite thing to get new information on.

I think I will get lost in the codex and spend hours just sifting through it.

Yes the lore is very important to me. The awesome dwarven lore in this game has already led me to create a dwarf character for the first time (seems many people feeel the same lol).

Lore in the forms of myth and history, set the tone and mood for the entire setting. Without it, we might as well put some colour chalk in our mouths and spray hand patterns all over the cave walls.

giskard44, thanks for opening this thread! It's very interesting to see what people think of lore and story in the games they play.

Personally for me, the Story is first, gameplay is a close second. If the gameplay is good, but the story and/or acting (voice included) is horrible, I will most likely quit playing. On the other hand, if the story is incredible, I will play through some crappy gameplay if the story holds my interest.

As for DA:O, I've read all of the lore and I'm damn excited to soon be playing along side of it as it happens! If the gameplay is as good as the story, this will be one helluva dark fantasy epic!

Shiny!

Lore is very important to me, but even the best Lore is irrelevant if it's not a good story. That's why DA has been so interesting to me. The Lore is wonderful, and the stories that I have seen thus far are really well done. And don't even get me started on the books. I am just barely into The Calling, and I am hooked.

Three cheers to David Gaider and his team for doing a great job on the story!

I am happy lore is valued here, I must confess I make lore mods for other games and rather enjoyed it but disliked the lore i was using because it was "patchy and hollow". Dragon Age lore already seems to have more depth and more appeal.

Just think about what we know about the deep roads already, what might be down there.

Legion of Death

Dark Spawn

Spiders

Cursed land

Ruined cities and outposts

Hidden treasures

Right there you have a wealth of cool things thats all lore related, from my perspective as a modder thats fantastic for quest making and if i explore the dwarven civilization a little in the process, nobody will complain. Unlike the Bard in the stolen thrown, I do have the time to stop and look at the statues :D

I'm always more into fictional worlds where the lore is vast and detailed, so I'm thrilled that we've already gotten to know a fair deal about Dragon Age's. From what I've seen of it, I like how it's taken some more traditional fantasy elements (elves, dwarfs, dragons, etc) and put a new spin on them. I can't wait to play the game and learn more about the setting. I'll probably also get the tabletop game, eventually.

I feel lore is very important in a game and is the difference between completing a game and realy enjoying its single player but not realy going back once its completed on the hardest difficulties ( COD and GOW) and spending hundreds of hours engrossed in the game playing the minute your back from work or a night out and searching lore on wikies and buying books to further immerse yourself this is where games like dragon age destroy even movies in my opinion ( Mass effect, Oblivion, fallouts etc)

Dragon ages lore is actually intresting more so because so many of the games backgrounds and settings are influenced by real life nations and events Orlais is clearly finspired and Feralden i think is english orientated the structure amd layout of Denherim for example and this is intriguing and kinda helps me relate to the world and the feelings of those it portrays i have a slight light hearted contempt for all things frenchy. The one disapointing aspect of the lore for me is the Magi it has very clear parellels with warhammer lore the fade is similar to the warp and has almost the exact dangers the chantrys hatred of blood mages and apostates also closely matches warhammers lore against psychics however the religous side is matched by real life examples.

The darkspawn are kinda like a crossbreed of locust/orcs but they do appear to be repulsive there breeding methods in particular and sinister though i was disapointed by the archdemon coulda least being bigger or more intelligent would have being a more credible danger even pride demons look more capable of world domination.

The elves are slightly underveloped lorewise in my opinion though i feel this could be due to the detail in the Dwarves and the human kingdoms. it may even be intentional the elves do not know their history so how can we? still they cross me as relativly unimportant in the schem of things which is also a welcome change elves being noble and all knowing is annoying at best we are only human after all :} at least they are not flawless. The historical background and potential is massive each nation has its own lore and Ferelden alone has plenty its own human political climate is clearly unstable and very easily unbalanced by certain individuals and houses. The noble families also cleary have jealousy and rivalry some going back to the war against Orlais and some will now be more recent im intrested to see if these play out further into dragon age 2.

The dwarven kingdom is extremaly intresting its different castes and the castless in particular and their strange rules make their politics and honour code very intresting but also dangerous particualrly considering the fact they are constantly warring against the darkspawn and their numbers are apparently dwindling how long can the clearly defined cast system hold will the castless be mass conscripted for example or with martial power weakening will ther desperation and anger turn into a civil war in Orzammer a three way battle their would be chaotic at best. The legion of the dead is also in my opinion like a sub class and their sacrifice and totaly down to earth attitude despite the fact they are in the worst place in the games world makes them admirable and i hope an origin with them will become available or at least more time exploring their lifes and battles. The dwarven nobles by nature seem to be very politicaly motivated this actually made me very careful with my choices during my return to Orzammer it also seems they are suseptibe to want religous change something that may easily lead to both civil war or perhaps even war against humanity. the other dwarven kingdom also intrests me they sound like they are very resentful and their long isolation may have changed their ways a Dwarve on Dwarve war while fighting the darkspawn while the casteless rise up with perhaps an human exalted march coming thats a games worth of story line in itself all you need is the Qunari it would be like a Dragon Age world war.

Basically the way the games lore portrays the state of the world and your effect upon it. It is very easy to become hooked into it and wonder what ill be doing in the next game if you were plumped in given no information bare bone dialougue and told to kill some nasty ground originated monsters you might bring the game back because it wouldnt be as intresting in my opinion.

Im also curious about the grey wardens will they become forgotten again or will the chantry decide they are heretical as a group they seem to provoke both deep respect and also mistrust their methods could also lead to serious problems for example if they used blood magic after a blight punishment could be demanded also why did they kill off griffons before we had a chance to use one.

The werewolves intrest me a great deal the options with them could lead to intresting possibilities i think the fact their resonably intelligent and at times not utterly savage means they could become a force to be reckoned with they should defintley be explored more a werewolvle leader figure if it wanted could easily carve out a domain for them no medievel army could of stood against a werewolve legion if such things existed. The barbarians could overwhelm the roman legions so id very much like them to become a military force politics are probaly not possible with werewolves I think?.

I also want a werewolve companion think about shale as the tank and the werewolve causing severe chaos with powerful attacks it could be realy cool.

The Qunari also are bound to be a intresting force a army of stens with cannons sounds like a serious force to be reckoned with they also seem to have every intention of continually advancing I also wish the option to be a Qunari was allowed. Trying to gain their trust respect and support against darkspawn would aklso probaly be a intresting mission line they do not seem very reasonable with those who do not follow their ways.

There is so musch lore in this game that the POSSIBLE way it can develop is literally a massive amount of imersion and enjoyment. The fact i wrote all taht answers the question of weather i think lore is important i think :} sry got kinda carried away a lil bit.

When it comes to the lore of the game, there is no aspect of it which fascinates me more than the myriad of creatures you see before you, from the exotic and graceful halla to the mighty and majestic High Dragons. It makes me want to learn more about this rich world of creatures, but at times I remind myself that this is a world coming unto itself, there are almost infinite possibilities of how the rich tapestry of the game is unfolded, and I wonder, what if I managed to be one of the many people to compose that lore. It's a dream, to be sure, but not something beyond conceivability.

My starting point are the Dragons, the majestic icons of the Game. At times I wonder, are the drakes truly the matured versions of male dragons? And if so how do they copulate with fully matured High Dragons? Because surely something no bigger than a truck would have trouble mating with a monster the size of a castle. What if drakes are just the juvenile forms of male dragons, just as smaller versions of the winged dragons exist in the game. And that there is a another kind of dragon which is the larger adult version of the drake. I imagined something that was a deadly force to reackon and linked to the pre-established concept of dragon sexual dimorphism, so I though of the Great Wyrm, a dragonic creature that moves on all fours, no wings, but comes heavily armoured with massive spurs and spines, and capable of breathing fire. Easily large enough to size up to a high dragon. Due to their limited movement capabilities and reptilian instincts, they delve underground to reach other parts of thedas, as a result they are rarely glimpsed. But this brings them in contact with the darkspawn.

I like the story.... although it's obvious they borrowed quite a lot from other multiverses for their lore. I'm finding it pretty entertaining, the game and the books... reading the Calling now, Duncan as a young man is interesting.

Had to skip past most of the comments, don't know a great deal about the lore, but I think the very first lines of the game are enough to hook anyone! Fantastic idea and I look forward to learning about the past! ^_^

The lore is just ok for me. Its pretty standard stuff in the genre. The story is also very familiar and cliche.
The most interesting part for me was the Wardens Keep story, I liked reading the history behind it. Besides that, the lore is not good enough to make me buy a book or be further interested in the Dragon Age world, but for a typical computer rpg (with all the limits and shallowness that is usually found in them) its decent I guess.

The only thing I don't like about the lore is the Darkspawn, or at least how the story revolves around defeating them. Aside from that, there's been little in it that hasn't intrigued me.

While I'm not as interested into the specifics of each culture as much as I'd like, I do like the major rifts in history for the races, especially the Tevinter Imperium. I really feel that basing the story more off of these cultures could create for a far more interesting story, but again it is personal taste.

I also find the Maker an incredibly deep and well-rounded being in the game's lore, and also nearly everything revolving around him: Andastre, the Taint, the Fade, all of it. And there is *nothing* I want more in this series than to visit the Black City itself. Just seeing it in the Fade gives me goosebumps, that place looks terribly foreboding.

Although I'm not that far into the game, I think I know what Pocketgb means. The lore of World of Warcraft is amazing and huge! You've got such characters as Illidan and Arthas that give the game such a personality and edge. It's the same with the Baldur's Gate series, The Forgotten Realms. You had characters like Drizzt and Elminster, Halaster and Khelbun! You know about them beforehand and when you meet them it's like "WOW THAT'S SYLVANAS!" But then you have to give it time for characters to get like that. I mean before World of Warcraft there was Warcraft 1-3. This is just the first, right? :)
