Creating this thread based on speculation about the rumored DLC character.

News feed in Illium mention a thief named Kasumi.

Today, 11 February 2010, this post was created:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/1143264#1143264

Power Damage Modifiers vs Resistances:

  • Warp, Reave: x2 armor, barrier
  • Overload, Shield Jack: x2 shields
  • Concussive Shot: x3.5 barrier (note this is a low damage power)
  • Incinerate: x2.4 vsarmor
  • Incendiary Grenade: x2 vs armor
  • All other biotics: x1.5 barrier
  • All other tech powers: x1.5 shields
[/list]

Check out next to Overload - an ability called Shield Jack.  Sounds thiefy and techy -- like for an engineer/infiltrator type.  One may argue that the dev actually meant Energy Drain, but I do not believe that said Dev would make that kind of mistake.  So, I am inferring from this that this is a special ability of the upcoming DLC character.

Then again, Chris Priestly did do the whole New ass Effect forum avatars for ME2 Game owners thread title thing.

More on the arguement that Shield JackEnergy Drain -- I believe having a x2 multiplier on Energy Drain would be greatly overpowered as the user recieves that energy to replenish shields.

Sounds like Energy Drain's function.  Also not sure what the cooldown on it is, but if it's anything like the other armor buffing abilities, it's nowhere near overpowered.

I dunno, I've worked in-house at a couple developers and people call stuff by their prototype name long after its changed. Gets to be a habit, it's probably just Energy Drain. At first I thought it meant Jack does more damage to shields :l

Just a heads up... You typoed "Mass Effect" and wrote "ass Effect" instead haha.

With regards to Kasumi, I think there's a Youtube video up as well, with soundfiles from Kasumi. She sounds like a slightly oldish Japanese woman... Who likes ramen.

It was not my typo.  That was the name of the original thread of Chris Priestly:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/129/index/1148256

The first few pages joke about the his typo including a picture of Miranda's voluptuous and virtual buttocks.

Shield Jack probably refers to Energy Drain. As someone mentioned before, it's probably just a prototype name.

And I hope we get an Infiltrator-style NPC, not another Engineer.

Energy Drain used to be called Shield Jack. We changed it late in the project so we often make that mistake. I'll ask Christina to update her post.

I was hoping you'd actually just let this one run and I could play conspiracy theorist and say that is what you wanted us to think. Wait...I can still do that right?

Indeed let us conspire. I for one don't buy this convenient explanation by Bioware. My theory is that the Jack in shield Jack is actually referencing Jack the biotic prisoner. Therefore the only logical conclusion is that Kasumi's special ability apparently allows her to lift and then wield Jack as a human shield.

Brings a whole new meaning to "Barrier."

Wouldn't Shield Jack make Kasumi the one taking fire?

Given the game's treatment of the Japanese language, I'm increasingly concerned about this character. I posted a thread on this a while ago, but it's been lost to the higher numbers. If there's any possibility of Kasumi trying to speak Japanese, I may avoid getting her to avoid further flinching.

From my earlier post:

Dear Bioware,

If I could make a gentle request regarding the Japanese language: please find a native speaker (there is a large Japanese community in Vancouver - great restaurants) or fluent foreigner to check proposed Japanese usage in ME3. The "Irasshaimase" in the Citadel is driving me nuts. The word is fine for a storekeep calling potential customers. But the pronunciation is so wrong that it hurts my ears. It's not "Irashaimas" but "ira-shy-ma-sey". If that pronunciation is to tricky for your voice actors, go with "irasshai" (pronounced "ira-shy") and drop the mispronounced "mase". "Irasshai" is a more colloquial version but works.

While on this topic, in ME1, Maeko Matsuo's use of Japanese is similarly grating. The use of honorific titles like "san" or the more respectful "sama" is tricky, and usually mistaken by English speaking otaku who pick up Japanese from anime. Honorifics should be used with the name of the person addressed (second person address) or when describing a third-party outside of the speaker's "in group" (uchi vs. soto in Japanese). So, Captain Matsuo's references to "Benezia sama" are fine because Benezia is outside of the captain's in group and entitled to respect. Captain Matsuo's references to "Parasini san", however, are incorrect. They are incorrect because Parasini is employed by the same entity as the captain, and thus in Matsuo's "uchi" or "in group" especially as against Shepard. If Matsuo were addressing Parasini, then "Parasini san" would be appropriate based on the second-person rule. (Real world example, I am outside PM Harper's in group and would refer to him as Harper san/sama or use the PM's title Harper-shusho, if I were addressing him directly, or describing him to someone else. If, however, I were on his staff, I would tell callers that "Harper is out" - no honorific because he would then be in my in group).

But every time I hear her say "Parasini san" to Shep, I flinch.

I lived in Kobe for two years and majored in Japanese in undergrad, and would volunteer my editing skills on any proposed Japanese in ME3.

Thank you

I thought Parasini san was accurate; i don't see how Matsuo and Parasini are in the same group. Ones part of a company of mercs hired by synthetic insights the other is an agent undercover as a secretary to discover white-collar crime of synthetic insights.

I would think the more annoying aspect of all this is shes still talking in Japanese while you have a supposed translator....

besides, you don't have to speak perfect Japanese. I can get lazy with my native English, why can't a guy working a ramen shop all hours pronounce something funny. (sounded pretty correct to me)

Re Parasini - they may very well be different groups to each other, but to you, they are the same group (both employed, either directly or indirectly, by some component of synthetic insights). It is the relationship to the second person that determines the address.

Re the ramen guy, it's that his laziness is actually a different word. Irasshaimas (what it sounds like) is a colloquial pronunciation of the honorific irasshaimasu, which means "to honorably exist." Same root verb (irassharu), but very different meaning.

Honorifics don't translate directly either. Sort of like when Thane calls Shepherd 'siha'.

Interesting discussion. Whoever Kasumi is, assuming that is the next DLC squadmate, that character is probably already finished, so I doubt we could get them to change anything now.

It would certainly rock if it was a thief, though ;-) I saved Infiltrator for my third playthrough and I'm hoping to start that when we get a substantial new DLC.

Might come with a mission DLC. Pointless to have a standalone character DLC after the game's been out for a while.

I think she needs a better name.

Seriously.

I entered Kasumi "Mass Effect 2" as a search item and got tons of links to that Dead or Alive woman. Sorry, don't know who she is, I don't play that game.

I'm eagerly anticipating a new friend for Shepherd.

I just hope she's not as disappointing as Zaeed was.

I actually reinstalled the game and took the loss of all my achievements just to get rid of him.

Hopefully Kasumi will have some sort of squad passive like Miranda. It would certainly make her a more attractive option instead of everyone taking Miranda everywhere due to her being so OP.

shell be exactly like zaeed. shell be like the rest of the squaddies but she wont have alot of dialogue on the normandy. she wont be romancable. shell prolly be old so you wont want to romance her. shell prolly have an accent. shell prolly be hot. i just wonder what her bonus skill is. hopefully another biotic ability. not a debuff, but something else instead of slam. we have enough defensive and DoT bonus abilities.

she looks like shed carry a sniper rifle and the hand canon. probably has a tech ammo mod, overload, and cryo er something.
