I've thought about this for a while and couldn't get it straight. why would saren need to find the conduit? It's simply a backdoor to the citadel, right? Can't he just walk in the front door, with his spectre status and all, and just hack the mainframe? I mean, who's to stop him? He could just say it's spectre business. Then Sovereign can come in and manually set the relay off and let the reapers in. Wasn't the original purpose of conduit to let the Prothean scientists get into the citadel so they can manipulate the keepers? I can see why they would need it because likely they didn't have the ship/ resources to get there conventionally. But why does Saren require the conduit?

Only reason I can think of is that Spectre status does not grant you direct access to the mainframe. Likely someone gets you what you need without actually letting you tamper with it. In that case, I guess Saren couldn't just say "hey why don't you hack the mainframe for me so I can kill everyone?" But then again, he was the most respected Spectre. You'd think if anyone could hack it openly, or by deceptive means, it'd be he.

Two reasons. Number one, Sovereign new that the conduit was casuing problems but he did not know how it was. Also he was just one reaper if he failed the other reapers could be trapped in dark space forever. Sovereign had to know how the coduit had stopped them from coming through before he tried to manually open it. Second they had two do this right the first time, Sarens job was to keep them arms open until Sovereign got in, with 200,000 C-sec they could have shot him up.

Saren needed the conduit to get the Geth army into the citadel tower in order to hold it long enough to access the mainframe and bring the citadel's mass relay systems online.

I very much doubt they would have let him just walk up to the citadel controls and start fiddling with things. Also Sovereign most likely had him investigating why his signal to the citadel was no longer working and after finding the beacon on eden prime he was placed as a rogue spectre because of the investigation making it even more unlikely that he would just waltz right in there
And as Salvo said the conduit was a way from him to bring a geth army in through the back door giving him the time to hand the citadel over to Sovereign

Saren never knew how to activate the Citadel, he was only taught how to allow Sovereign to take control. He *could* have just walked up to it (well, not really, CSec would have slaughtered his turian ass), but without Sovereign there...

Saren is trying to stall Sovereign attack.
Best way to stall Sovereign; convince Sovereign they need to find out what the Conduit is before they can attack the Citadel.

In addition to what's been said, even Sovereign didn't know what the conduit was; it just knew that the conduit was related to why the Citadel relay hadn't responded when it sent the signal to activate it. They were in the dark almost as much Shepard and company.

Saren's spectre status was revoked before you even leave the Citadel. A wanted fugitive isn't going to be allowed to waltz into the Council chamber and start tampering with major systems that are illegal for anyone to mess with.
