I like both games actually ME1 focus on the story while ME2 focuses on the characters.

ME1 - better story and feeling of vastness (thanks largely to elevetars, to me :P).

ME2 - Better gameplay and flow.

So in the end, I like them both, and prefer seeing them as one single experience.

In fact I love both games! :) But...

ME1 has better story, more dialogue options, better game atmosphere and romance.
ME2 has better graphics, much more game hours and DLC

ME2

I hate ME1 and Iam currently having to replay it as I lost all my saves. ME1 is SO ****ING SLOW! You know it takes over 24 hours of playing time to get ME1 100% completed?

ME1 is far better. ME2 was a major disappointment with very little story because all the resources went into the shiny new combat system.

For me, it's the same as what pretty much everyone else is saying.
I prefer Mass Effect 1 for it's far better story, environments, and RPG elements.
I still love Mass Effect 2 and believe it has superior gameplay (reminded me of Gears of War.)
As well as the fact that 2 is a lot shinier to look at, and there is so much more DLC offered (Cerberus Network is a big bottle of win in my book.)

I prefer ME1. The Combat in ME2 feels clunky and slow to me, while in ME1 I was able to smoothly move from battle to battle. It just doesn't make much sense to have your primary defense be convenient boxes, crates, and chest high walls. Also, I love the wide open feeling of exploring compared to planet scanning. There are some great characters in ME2, but the rest of the galaxy feels a bit more drab, although the better bits of DLC spiced it up somewhat.

They are both solid games, but I think that ME2 fell flat on it's face with some of the new things they tried more often than not.

I'm a Mass 2 fan, myself. I find the story to be more entertaining, I found myself caring about taking down the Collectors, but not really giving a **** about Saren. Sovererign, however, was a douchebag, but less annoying than Harbinger.

My main problems with Mass 1 were that of the six squadmates, the three really boring characters of them were the ones in the spotlight, which made me more or less just get bored a good amount during the game. Garrus, Wrex and Tali (kind of) actually had good personalities, which I enjoyed. Kaidan and Liara had none, and Ashley just had a really annoying one.

Whereas, in Mass 2, it's all about the squad and character development. Sure, Thane, Samara and Legion didn't really get that much time to character develop, unless you got them immediately after Horizon (Though it seems everyone found time to give Legion some development lol). This game introduces Jack, which is completely awesome to me, as well as letting Garrus and Tali become LIs (inb4 "retcon" or "giving in to fanbase"), which fit with them. I'm not at all saying that every squadmate should be an LI, but Garrus and Tali make total sense. Whereas Thane's just kind of seemed thrown in there... I kind of wish that Thane and Grunt's recruitments were switched. It makes sense to me that you'd get the Krogan later and the Assassin earlier, especially since Thane is not only a cover character, but was also, I believe, the first Mass 2 squadmate announced. Very strange. Ah well.

I enjoyed Mass 1 okay, the combat system annoyed (Still annoys) the crap out of me, and to me it was fixed heavily in Mass 2. I'm cool with RPG features, but not ridiculous over-amount like there was in Mass 1. But that's just me.

I'm still barely 1/2 way throguh ME2 but I still can't get to like it as much as ME1. Without the RPG elements, exploration (and maps!), inventory and character development, I feel like I'm playing a simple arcade video game. I do like the characters and story, but the game play is more like a mindless target practice game. Obviously I'm a huge RPG fan, and I'm hoping that ME3 reverses this trend towards pleasing Halo fans.

Bioware is the best RPG maker IMO - they should work that magic!

As a Vanguard gamer, I would have to admit that you weren't as powerful this time around as you were in Mass Effect 1.

In the first game, my Vanguard Shepard was invincible. Mass Effect 2's vanguard, on the other hand, is more challenging thanks in no small part to its bugs.

Sometimes you can't get a vanguard charge lock even if you're standing right in front of them. Also, melee doesn't do any damage if you strike too quickly in succession.

So it's a mixed bag to me in hindsight. I somewhat miss the immortal power of ME1's Vanguard and the fast-firing pistols. They're both just as good in their own ways, but Mass Effect 2 has more polish when it comes to presentation.

Totally worth it even though I feel still feel that the ME2 story is superior.

ME1
PLUS POINTS
More Mysterious story than ME1
Great Villian (Saren and Sovereign) - better than the collectors and Harbringer
Huge amounts of Secondary Missions

Negative Points
gameplay is terrible in comparison to ME2 and is worse than most competition
Graphics do not refresh very well
Too many recycled levels
Short amount Primary Mission's
Too Many secondary missions.
Inventory system
Horrible vehicle dynamics

ME2
PLUS POINTS
Gameplay - a lot better in every way to ME1 and rivals
Characters - a huge variety of characters
Missions - A large level of missions in the primary story
Weapons System - simplified to such an extent it does not get in a the way of the story
Graphics - Alot better than ME1 and is a leader of graphics
No Recycled Maps
Mining is better
Research system makes it easier improving the characters

NEGATIVE
Few Secondary Missions
Lack of vehicles (excluding Hammerhead being glued onto it at a later date)
Lack of weapon customisation
Story is amazing but not quite as good as ME1.

Overall for me I say ME2 is the best of them and in my opinion will be hard to beat

Mass Effect 2 was a lot more Effective then it's predecessor, though there were a couple of things that Bioware didn't get right enough to make it the most Effective blockbuster game up to date, these are:

1. The Protagonist-Antagonist Setup was missing in the majority of the Narative.
2. That plot has an unique structure that was lacking grip and focus thus the Audiance sometimes has to guess things like "why am i doing this?''
3. There is no actual economy system nor is there any kind of struggle involed, making the Developments in the story stactic.
4. The boundries have fallen, anything can happen the suspension of disbelief is no longer a major point, and the feel contemporary sci-fi realism is gone.

On the whole I prefer ME2. The package in its entirety is more satisfying to me, despite ME1 having several advantages in concept and occasionally in execution. I also tire quickly when a game wastes my time, which ME1 does quite a lot and which ME2 does rarely. I find a lot of ME2's environments a bit too stock and generic for what they try to do, however, particular with regard to how there are so many planets with generic tropical environments and the occasional rampaging... pyjak.

Mass Effect 1 is better then ME2. only thing ME1 should take from ME2 is the gameplay, everything else( rpg elements, story, elevators, etc.) should be like ME1
