I love both. Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 are both great. I have to say, however, that Mass Effect 2 is overall better. The gameplay was highly improved and I've no longer the inventory management nightmare of Mass Effect.

Mass Effect 2 is way better, except for story. Immersion, gameplay, environments, graphics, I think anyone who insists that ME1 is better is wearing a pair of nostalgia glasses.

Both?

ME1 - more interesting story twists. Miss old team, Liara, Kaidan/Ash, Wrex, the world felt bigger, like Citadel, miss elevator conversations between squad mates.

ME2 - good graphics (for my taste), missions were fun/more diverse, some new cool squadmates, went overboard with reducing inventory, but overall liked the change, new Normandy is awesome, combat is more fun, but too much like "Gears of War" like, but still better.

Mass Effect 2 would have been a perfect game, in my eyes, if the ending wasn't so unsatisfying. Thinking back to ME1, the Ilos mission followed by the Citadel mission is a good example of what a satisfying ending should be. Lololololo so really... if ME2 just had a grand finale in addition to the suicide mission it would easily be my favorite game of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Regardless, I will go with ME2 for its superior gameplay, presentation and characters.

And I could say any one who thinks Mass Effect 2 is better is hung up on the hype and newness of the game.

I prefer ME1, and I think in a year most will acknowledge it had a better story.

I do think ME2 was a bit more polished and the combat more refined. ME2 had major problems in the plot, as well as some really bad decision's on things carried over from ME1.  ME1 romances scream as the most blatant example.

I can't agree that ME2 is more polished (unless we have totally different ideas as to what polished is heh), ME2 is way buggier than ME1.

a few examples off the top of my head:

Character getting "stuck" facing one firection after leaving cover (normally fixable by going back into cover)
Enemies being able to shoot through solid objects (most annoying bug/design flaw)
and getting stuck on the edges of walls in some areas.

Otherwise I agree whole-heartedly.

ME1 for story depth.
ME2 for gameplay and polish.

Agreed. ME2 is a great game, especially in terms of performance. But the ending was unsatisfying. I had the feeling i didn't achieve anything to rescue the universe. Let's hope that the story of ME3 returns to the story telling quality ME1 had.

3) Both Equal

ME1 was the kickstarter to a new franchise with a load of details; ME2 fleshes things out, adds new stuff, drives the story forward.

Feels to me somewhat like asking what part of "Lord of the Rings" I like the most - it's one (long) story in three (long) parts of one (long) book.

ME1

Texture pop-in is the only blemish in that entire game. Everything else boils down to preference. Plain and simple.

ME1 had it's issues that ME2 improved on or fixed, but ME2 has so many of it's own bugs/problems that I went back to 1 and enjoyed playing a technically inferior/duller game more : /

ME2 for better gameplay and more in depth characters, ME1 for more epic story, I also enjoyed a level cap of 60 more than 30.

Oh yeah, since I played the Pinnacle station DLC no so long ago I had time to replay ME, I can assure you: nostalgia has nothing to do with it.
ME1 is superior, but for you, you can go back scanning more planets ,and shooting in straight corridors  if you want "superior" gameplay.

ME2, not even close.

ME1 was maybe an 8 out of 10 for me. A game I loved for its concept, story, and ambition but with far too many flaws, poorly implemented ideas, and the least interesting cast of Bioware NPCs in a game (not counting Neverwinter Nights).

ME2 is very seriously a 10/10 game. Everything that was broke from the first game was fixed. It has the strongest cast of characters since BG2 and Bioware wisely chose to avoid the second act lull by making the story far more character driven.

I see the Mass Effect games as 1 long story so i have no preference and still play both regularly.

I play through ME2 with my current shepard and while I,m doing that I create a new shepard in ME so I play both at the same time then repeat the process when I have completed playthroughs on both and considering it takes me a while to do both playthroughs i,m good for a long time to come.

Which one i play on any given day depends on my mood and when ME 3 comes out i will do this process with all 3 Mass Effect games.

ME1

ME2, aside from the story, also didn't feel like the labor of love that ME1 did. It felt like the work you HAVE to do to do what you really want.

Basically, in ME1, they built up a whole new universe, and reveled in it. In ME2, it just felt like they were frustrated by working within the confines of it...and were too focused on the conclusion, than on what was going on during this middle chapter.

I liked the first one better.

ME1

Actually has RPG elements, better story.

ME2 - has better characters, better side quests.

What you do in ME2 seems trivial. It has SCANNING. Its dumbed down.

ME1. The dialogue and story were better, IMO, and the skills in play were my character's, not mine. I was very disappointed in the major combat system shift from the first to the second part of this franchise; there are already plenty of options if I wanted to play a war shooter.

For me it's definitely ME2. Just about everything has been improved for the better.

In my opinion ME2 had much, much better gameplay mechanics (both the shooter aspects and the RPG aspects). There was less tedium and although more customization wouldn't hurt in ME3, I think the removal of the inventory was an inspired move. Juggling that damn thing wasn't fun.

I preferred the character development in ME2 and it felt like the story had better pacing. This might be caused by the lack of driving around in seemingly identical procedurally generated hills for hours and much more varied and fun side missions.

Mark Meer still sounds like he's phoning his performance in and Jennifer Hale is still the best Shepard by far. No change there. The rest of the casting was top notch.

The only place I felt was a step back was the usability and handling of the UI. The new art style was great, but it's pretty rough in places. I was missing a journal shortcut key, I was constantly tricked by the change to the esc-key in the galaxy map and multiple times I wanted to dismiss the various dialog boxes with the space-bar, but always had to use the mouse for some odd reason. There's also still a problem where skipping dialog sometimes selects from the dialog wheel by mistake. I'd love to see progress in the usability department for ME3.

Lastly I'd love to see the intrusive tutorial messages dialed back a notch (or ten). There's no reason to block everything with a flashing sign. Yes, I've read it. Now please remove it from the screen.

I played both on the PC.
