ME2

I made a poll, some time ago here:
http://social.biowar...596/polls/1670/

The majority says ME2

majority of  what? 140 people? and probably part of them never played the first ME.

I' m really sorry to say it but ME2 is a bad TPS and a bad RPG with a lame story who royaly mess up with how ended the first game.

I suppose that if I want a good tps I should stick with Army of Two or Gears of War and if I want a good (w)rpg I should stick with DA:O or Fallout 3.

And to think that Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk bashed jrpgs for being stagnant...

ME1 all the way.

ME2 certainly has commendable visuals, and a nice selection of weaponry; however the whole "The Gears of Mass War Effect 2" gameplay (run, duck, cover, shoot, run, duck, cover, shot), gets old, fast.

Not to mention that the level layout in ME2 is ******-poor. Boxes, crates, and pillars E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E.

ME2's plot = weak and forgettable 2 hour made for TV special.

Each to their own.

I'm torn. ME2 has good gameplay but I like how in ME1 I wasn't forced to be behind cover every second. In ME2 if you step out of cover you're dead, I liked using a combination of cover and shooting while moving in ME1, I feel too restricted in 2 I'm stuck popping up to shoot, down to regenerate.

Same here.
The next worst thing is that "the spacebar does everything".

You can't control it properly. The delay for running may actually break your strictly-timed plan to get into cover, and the "unintentional cover" that you get when running from place to place makes it hard to move from cover to the INTENDED cover.

All in all, I had no complaints in ME1 aside from keyboard/mouse input lockups.
ME2... what the duck happened to depth? Not to mention it got Gears-of-War-ified. Happy that the story was still there and voice acting wasn't done by my sister (yet).

I think ME1 wins overall (but I've only played through ME2 once). ME1 was much more of a space opera with lots of oddball sci-fi concepts thrown at you throughout the storyline. Hmm, someone should start a petition to bring back overheating and get rid of these magic goofy heatsink clips.

ME2 plays much more like the dirty dozen.

ME2 beats ME1 with the loot management, and the lack of fully functional equipment just lying around on probes on far flung planets. However, I liked that in ME1 you could equip your NPC characters with different weapons and armor to maximize against certain enemies. In ME2 it looks like you just always go with the latest researched weapon/armor upgrade - no real choice (except for weapon ammo abilities).

ME2 beats ME1 with slicker graphics, and some of the new abilities assigned to characters.

This!

Me1 had a much better story , it was more engrossing, Me2 is mostly about the characters and rounding them up.
The actual main story is almost non-existant in ME2.

ME2 combat is really fun though, and the scenery is pretty cool, but feels smaller somehow.

Here's hoping ME3 will be the penultimate ME game, with both an engrossing story and game play.
Also, include a helmet toggle again PLEASE!
Keep custom armor however.

Having gone out to replay ME1 recently to complete a female save game for use in ME2... I must say, I'm sticking with ME2. I find ME2's dialogue not only better scripted and better executed, but I like the pacing of ME2 better. Also, I really do find ME1's inventory tedious as sin.

Not to mention that combat in ME2 far outshines that in ME1 IMHO. I've made my point in various threads here, but when I went out and actually replayed ME1, I remembered why ME2 feels like the much better game to me.

Mass Effect 2 without a doubt.

The only thing I think ME1 has over ME2 is Saren is a way cooler villian than the Collectors.

ME1, because for me

story/characters > everything else

ME2 may be the better game (not sure here), but ME1 was without a doubt the better experience!

I dunno... the experience in ME1 consisted primarily of identical-looking bunkers, mines and science facilities. And the only missions with unique areas would be the major planets and stations (Citadel, Virmire, Therum, Ilos, Feros, Noveria). ME2 frankly has more variety in story and combat (a result of its anthology-esque mission structure).

I always liked the Rachni survival mission in the Styx cluster.

I like which ever I'm playing at the moment better. It's a give or take experience with their changes between the games so it's just which ever I'm playing now that I'll say is better.

Yes, but ME2 is a bit of a "dirty dozen" cliche as well, and some sof the NPC companions are pretty cartoonish... in a mostly good way though.

ME1 had better science, better RPG mechanics, better choices ect

ME2 had better character development, better gameplay, better scenery ect

I love just about love all the characters in ME2.

Find the middle ground for ME3=win

ME2 by far.

ME1 - the only thing I liked was the story and characters. The rest was pretty awful, especially now that I'm playing ME2, I realize just how bad the first part was. The RPG aspects were downright messy and uncomfortable, the shooter aspect was pretty horrid, and conversation, while great, had TOO MANY DUPLICATE ENTRIES. They fixed it in the sequel, but I still can't get over how they had a dialoge tree where most of the time, 2 replies resulted in the exact same response.

ME for the sheer scale of it. ME2 for combat. I found ME2 so short and small compared to the first. Don't get me wrong i loved the game. Damn shame tho.

I don't understand that, because not only was ME2 much, much longer, it also featured playable sidequests, (I consider copypaste lame one-room dungeons unplayable) and had 3 large hubs instead of just 1 (the citadel) in the first game.

ME for sheer scale? Is that a joke? Just compare the scenery in ME2 to the first game. Being inside a dead reaper. Fighting a giant worm (acual fighting, not shooting at it with a weak ass machine gun from the failtank called MAKO). Going through the Omega relay. Tuchanka. Illium. All of those were great moments, and what did ME1 have? Well the final battle was sort of cool, I guess. Going to Ilos and finally figuring out the Reapers. All in all, ME2 has MUCH MUCH more memorable moments.

Wait, are you saying that Tuchanka  who's the size of a small village is HUGE? are you saying even that Illium,Omega & Citadel combined doesn't even reach the size of the ME1 citadel are HUGE? are you saying that the ME2 final battle who consist in running straight foward in a corridor, then waiting in a platform and finally shooting some big giant bones is EPIC? oh well,we surely don't have the same interpretation for the word epic...

Sorry but you are wrong, terrible wrong

ME2 memorable moments??? are you ****ing kidding me??
The only memorable moments in ME2 is the ending, and its a CGI video.

ME1 on the other had tons of memorable moments, the presentation was incredible, the first look at the Citadel, the hunting for proof of Saren betrayal on the districts, the duel with Tali's mother on Noveria, the Rachni queen, the fighting with the mako throught the streets of a ancient prothean city (Pheros), the Thorian and the controlled village, just every thing on ILOS screams EPIC (As a matter of fact the ILOS mission > Entire ME2) , the Wrex confrontation in the salarian planet, Sovereign speech, the deccision to save Ashley or Alenko, the fighting on the citadel with the gravity inverted, the dialogue option to make Saren suicide, save the council or let them die.....
I could go on like forever, and I'm not even mentioned some of the best secondary quest ME1 had

Sorry but NO, I can understand that for the shooter croud ME2 has better gameplay, but there is NO way in HELL that ME2 could have more memorable moments.

MASS EFFECT 2 feels a little rushed to me, as though Bioware took the "shortest route" approach a bit too literally.

I like the feeling of immersion that comes from being able to walk the wards and the Presidium, for example. And the mineral scanning was, I think, the worst possible "solution" to planet EVAs in a game otherwise driven to tell a story by putting the player in the action.

MASS EFFECT 2 feels small and constrained: there is no space traffic anywhere, the mobs are in fewer numbers and the hubs much smaller, and almost all the environments are designed for maximum efficiency.

That makes for a quick run-through with no "fat" but it conversely leaves a feeling that it's all no more than a backdrop - it doesn't have a life of its own beyond the player's input.

Not a fan of heat clips, or the billions and billions of crates - the whole galaxy has become a warehouse, seemingly. The exploration part of the gameplay from the first title has been obliterated: I loved the long approach to the refinery, or to Peak 15 on Noveria, or on Ilos aboard the Mako.

ME2 is efficient: there you are, start shooting. But I like all the "boring" parts of MASS EFFECT, they lend a feel of a vast, granulous galaxy.

And the climax on the Citadel? Nothing in ME2 comes close to that level of intensity, of pushing forward against the tides of danger, of rushing through enemies towards the final confrontation - certainly not firing at a stationary target and looking at a boss health bar. The concept of the endgame in ME2 was sound ("we happy few") but the implementation needs a lot of work.

The lack of a villain is also problematic. I *agree* with it in concept - it's a galaxy of opportunists and fanatics of all trope that Shepard must now save, by allying herself with neo-con thugs. I get that and it's a great idea. But it would have been better to also introduce an element of personal involvement. Why not have Ashley Williams be captured on Horizon? Then have her send garbled emails, broken-off messages and so forth from the inside - make the endgame means something on the micro level.

"I am just a Hobbit. I can't save the world. I just want to save my friends" - the spirit of what I am talking about (not the details, obviously)

ME2 is not "epic"; it's lean and efficient.

Having said that, the virtual acting is top-notch and I don't remember having ever seen real-time tears in a videogame before. Good, good stuff. The paragon/renegade stuff was better implemented. The textures are sensational. The engine still works beautifully on a medium rig. Jennifer Hale's voice work is, if anything, even better than before. The character builds are more varied and the loyalty missions now yield a real difference.

For next time, Bioware: when making a space opera, think BIG rather than efficient.

Just another guy's op,

SirV
