I played ME1 a long time on a different harddrive and wasn't about to play through it again. So i'm about halfway through, and was just watching a different playthrough and it seems i'm missing a lot of stuff. Is this because i didn't import or is it just because i'm playing renegade and am going through the game differently? For example when I arrived on illium a lot of the side characters that you can talk to aren't there for me.

ME2 colours imported shepard's worlds with many different minor things that you'll recognise from ME1.
some are bugged, though. Like Conrad appearing to be the renegade version of himself no matter what you did in 1.

It's because you didn't import. Starting with ME2 really limits your game.

Most likely because you didn't play through ME1. I think in the default ME2 file, aside from Wrex being dead, Shepard also killed the Rachni queen, didn't hold back defending himself against the colonists on Zhu's hope, and executed the Asari enslaved by the Thorian. I was in your boat two days ME1 launched. I realized that all 4 of my old saves from ME1 were on another hard drive long gone. I forced myself to play through ME1, only did a couple side missions and the three crew member missions all while staring at the ME2 case sitting right under my TV. It was rough, but worth it imo.

yeah conrad isnt there at all for me. So i guess i'm screwed? that's kind of lame. I thought it was just going to be that the decisions were made for you but the content would at least still be there.
