I'm not sure about that, each class seems to have a pretty clearly defined role, and their special ability seems to compliment it in all cases. There are several cases where classes can "go against the grain" so to speak, one example is using an Infiltrator for CQC with a shotgun or flamethrower taking advantage of the tactical cloak to close with the enemy.

Don't worry about not having played the first: the classes play pretty much nothing like how they played in the first game.

The major classes not being played as they should be for optimum performance are Adept and Vanguard: every other class can just use their abilities, but Adept has to use their abilities a certain way on Insanity because of the enemy defenses; and Vanguard needs to either never use Charge or always use it as soon as it cools down, never anything in between. ^_^

Too much wrong information still out there about Vanguards. Check this thread http://social.biowar...8/index/1061080

It will show you that you can charge pretty much whenever and where ever you want to on insanity. I know it works fine for me. (borderline overpowered really.)

Being able to instantly recover your shields every 4.5 seconds or so? How could you ever call that overpowered? ;-)

Every class plays somewhat differently now, but I think each was tweaked in a way to add either more balance or more variety.

Soldiers now have a couple powers that actually affect gameplay, which makes them more interesting. It used to be that they basically just boosted damage or accuracy with their powers, and you had to constantly pull up the radial menu to stop action in order to active these weapon modes. Now, they have a couple abilities that actually feel like powers and work differently from what other classes can do, and they are easily hotkeyed even on an Xbox controller, so the action keeps going.

Engineers were fun in the previous game, but in my opinion, largely because they were underpowered. There wasn't a real reason to use one when you could get their most useful powers as an Infiltrator, but also have better weapon skills and protection. Now they are more tactically oriented, and their powers are among the strongest in the game.

Adepts used to be unstoppable disabling machines. You could literally have an entire room of enemies floating in the air defenseless while you just mowed them down. ME2 requires you to shoot a bit or use squad powers before you do that, and area of effect has been limited somewhat. It can play more or less the same, but is a bit more balanced.

Vanguards and even Sentinels were kind of overpowered in my estimation in ME1 as well, more due to defensive capabilities than offensive. You could basically keep a Barrier up indefinitely, and taking certain bonus skills made you pretty much an unstoppable up-close powerhouse (for Vanguards) or a master of all trades (for Sentinel). Sentinels can now be built in a couple very different directions, but can't be awesome at absolutely everything. Vanguards are still up-close powerhouses, but have to be more careful than in ME1.

Infiltrators play much as they did in the last game, though I miss making things boom before I shot them with my sniper rifle. In ME2 they now have a stealth power, which I heard might have been cut early from plans in ME1, This plays up the "stealthy operative" feel, which feels like a move in the same (fun, IMHO) direction.
