This may be a stupid question but when I pick up the Vindicator battle riffle (or any new weapon for that matter) there is a line in the description that reads something along the lines of "upgrades the avenger asault riffle" (or whatever the appropriate weapon class is). This wording is a bit ambiguous to me. Does it mean that this new weapon is an upgrade of the last one (the avenger in this case) or does it mean that finding this weapon will also cause the old one to be upgraded and increase it's performance? It seems to me that it probably means that the new weapon is just an upgrade to the old one but if that's the case than this seems like a poor choice of words.
Thanks

Its a separate weapon, only the research projects upgrade you weapons in terms of performance as far as I know.

yeah the wording is a more than a little ambiguous, it's mostly inaccurate as well given that the Vindicator functions significantly differently than the Avenger. But to answer your question, it's my understanding that that line is simply meant to indicate that that weapon is the logical "upgrade" to the previous (even though that's not entirely accurate as I stated) no boost to Avenger power by acquiring the Vindicator

by "upgrades", they really mean "overrides your current gun even though you don't want it to".

The Vindicator doesn't change the Avenger, but it's higher base damage. Whether it's actually better for you depends on how you use the assault rifle though. I think the Avenger is better if you use it to hose down things that get too close with full auto fire, but if you're nailing things with head shots at medium to long range then the Vindicator is by far the better gun. The Avenger is also better if you're not a great shot since it's easier to keep up on ammo and you don't need to be as precise with your aiming.
I'm guessing they worded it like they did for simplicity sake, assuming most people will use the new guns over the old, but the weapons aren't necessarily straight upgrades because of the difference in functionality.

I think it means that you need to pay more attention to whats happening to your guns and not assume stupid crap like if one gun is better than the other.IggyD wrote...

Anyways I'm pretty sure that every time you pick up a new gun, it upgrades all the previous guns before it. DLC guns don't upgrade anything.
I think they all get a small boost in damage, don't quote me on that.

wait, that makes no sense: how does picking up a gun suddenly improve another? they're not even the same model or from the same manufacturer!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who can see this going either way. I love this game and am grateful that the devs are so forthcoming with information in this board...I just wish this info was more clearly stated in the game. Anyway, a definitive answer from a dev or someone who has taken a look at the files on the PC version of the game would be awesome.
