The one that irritated me the most was on a femshep runthrough. I go down to see if Jack has anything new to say and she assumes I want a romance with her, and tells me off pretty damn rudely.

Which I guess would be ok, if I had an option to say "look b****, I was just being friendly. I'm already with someone and I wouldn't sleep with your skanky ass if you were the last b**** in the universe."

Or even a friendlier version.

As for Mordin, his version was hilarious.

And with Jacob, I just stopped talking to him, though that's the fault of Femshep. It seemed everything she said to him had this flirtatious edge, and it irritated me since I was completely uninterested.

Funny thing, on one playthrough where I was trying the Jacob romance to see what it was like I was being purposefully friendly and flirty, which is all too easy to do. Then at one point I said something and Jacob suddenly got pissed off at me and called the whole thing off. I was like WTF? He Dumped Me? Still not entirely sure why, but after that I just never bothered with him.

In the end I agree with you here. Especially with Jack, I really wanted to just be friends with her, but apparently the best you can hope for ( short of a male romance option ) is that she'll just blow you off.

Shepards interactions with the crew always feel like that of a counselor to me as opposed to an equal or friend. I really do hope they add to talking about things besides the NPC's past in the next game.

So far I have to say my loner (non-romantic) runs with Shepard somehow feel more right. But that might just be me .

I was disappointed by loyalShep's complete and utter lack of a "final message" to his/her LI from ME1. You'd think after missing the opportunity to tell your LI how you really felt before you "died" the first time, you'd take the few minutes of the two hours of freetime before a "suicide mission" to write an email, at the very least....

Loneliness is a massive theme is ME2. Every one of your crew is suffering in someway because of it.

--All of Garrus's friends have been murdered.

--Thane's wife has been murdered and he has been alienated from his son. He hasn't spoken to anyone in a long time about important things and is thankful to Shep for taking the time to talk to him.

--Jack has never really had any friends bar the two she speaks of. She thanks Shep for taking the time to talk to her as no one has every bothered to.

-- Samara/Morinth both lead lonely lives. Samara comments on how lonely she has been as a justicar working alone for 400 years with no team mates to converse with and Morinth talks about all her conquests and how she has never experienced true meaningful love at any point in her long life.

--Miranda has self-esteem issues related to her genetic modifications and has never allowed anyone to get too close.

--Jacob has issues about letting anyone get to close to him.

-- Modren has secrets that he keeps from his family with regards to his work and the huge burden of guilt that he carries about the genophage leading to loneliness. He attempt to reconcile this by speaking with his nephew before he leaves for the suicide mission.

--Joker strikes me as lonely as he is over defensive due in part of him feeling the need to justify himself due to his disease.

--Up until his loyalty quest Grunt feels as though he has no place in the world and doesn't belong.

I'm not so sure about Tali or Legion.

It's also understandable that Shep would be feeling a bit lonely too, he has just died and was resurrected. I don't know about you but I think that would mess with your head in a bit way.

This wasn't a bug, it was an error in the stupid Prima guide.  Would link the dev post but it's somewhere buried on the old site.

Thane and Samara will talk to you about non-romance stuff. You can hang out and get drunk with Dr. Chakwas. Plus that dinner with Kelly. So it's not all bad. I just wish my maleShep could talk with Garrus a bit more but otherwise I'm good.

I hadn't thought of it that way.  Somehow, it made even more sense as I read it in TIM's voice,:D

It's consistent with them too:

Tali has been alienated by the poltics of the admirals of her fleet, who use her as a political pawn in their debate over whether to go to war with the Geth, and by the death of her father.  Shepherd becomes her only friend and protector.

Legion is misunderstood and feared because he's a Geth, and a machine.  Only Shepherd takes the time to understand he's sentient and has free will.

And if any of them dies in the suicide mission, their death is a lonely one.  This includes Shepherd's.  If all of them die, Joker is left alone on the ship at the end, grieving.  It makes sense that this would be seen as a failure.

It makes the "No One Left Behind" achievement significant and resonant - your Shepherd has come to understand every member of the party, redeems them and saves them all.

These comments all echo a pretty consistent point: The real lack of good interaction among the squad. Even the romances were a bit...shallow. You could fall for Tali in two conversations. In Dragon Age, there was a BIG build up, and even with the odd gift system you had nearly half a dozen conversations before you even got to the point of "hey, I like you". Dragon Age felt more natural and all the characters were really fleshed out. I really hope Bioware works on the character interactions and stories as they have shown they can do excellent work in Dragon Age, but they were really lacking in ME 2.

Hell, even before the final battle, in Dragon Age each character said something meaningful to you.  Your love interest also said something memorable, like Leliana saying "come home, my love" and all that.  In ME2, your squad is pretty static and the most interest they show in your wellbeing is...well...even in ME 1 they said "Shepar is hit!!!".

As for Dragon Age, yeah, I could never turn down Leiliana.  She was unfortunately too cute..

But... people keep saying that all this extra stuff with the squadmates is what makes the game have so much depth in ME2. Are they wrong? (I think so.)

It was a bit more than ME 1 in some places, but woefully lacking in what Bioware can usually do.  I hope that now that the level system, graphics, and combat are pretty set and likely to transfer over to ME 3, that Bioware really focuses on the squad.  It would be terribly disappointing to play ME 3 and find your characters muted reaction to the END OF THE WORLD the possible ULTIMATE SACRIFICE OF SHEPARD or even GLORIOUS VICTORY.  If all they say at the end of ME 3 is "wow, good work Shepard" and your love interest gives you a peck...well damnit I am going back to play Baldurs Gate II...

Tali feels isolated from people outside the Flotilla because of the suit she has to wear and the way people look at her for it.

You could say that Legion and the Geth long for peace and understanding from other races and that they are isolated by people's hatred of them.
