Excel will be used to a degree, yes, but the bulk of everything will be done in SPSS.
Poll will be shut down later this afternoon, as soon as I get home from work.

Saying "Tali is not as popular as her fans would indicate" misses the mark, IMO. It's rather "Tali is popular, but her being so turns off a certain subset of people, who don't like the Tali fans / don't like the mainstream opinion".

Hm, I'd say that the "backlash" Tali is getting is from a certain subset of people ( contrarians, so to say ) who are upset that people like her so much. Those tend to give out low notes just to spite the mass of players who like that character. So I'd say Talis popularity should be a tad higher, but it is difficult to separate the people who got turned off by her active fanbase from the people who genuinely didn't like her.

You may be right, but that is simply the nature of polls and elections and popularity contests. For example, in the Massachusetts special election we had last month, lots of people voted for Scott Brown simply because they didn't like Martha Coakley. It wasn't that Martha Coakley was a bad candidate or anything, they just liked Scott Brown more.

Yeah, it's owned by IBM. The program is actually called PASW now, but I still prefer to call it SPSS.

True, I was mostly referring to your comment on the results of one of the two earlier surveys. The amount of people on the forum who get bent all out of shape when someone says something positive about Tali ( outside of her own fan thread ) and begin to rant about how much they don't like the enthusiasm of the Tali fans, seems like a pretty big indicator that the results may get skewed significantly by this part of the fanbase. Some people sadly are very susceptible to such negative campaigning.

Just like I mentioned before, we shouldn't take the survey too seriously. The real stats are with the DevTeam.

It does, just know that, don't let people tell you anything diffrent. Here's another note to remember. There are obviously more Talimob fans, so if anything is skewed, they get the upperhand, because they are more numerous. It's cool, but his claim actually works more effectively the other way around.
But I agree, all sides are guilty, which makes the survey severely flawed.
Either way it does tell some facts.
1) Tali does have a monopoly in these boards, but hardly outside of these boards
2) There are also a good number of ME1 LI fans to boot
3) Miranda and all of the ME2 characters are favored over the ME1, which I attribute to this being a "new" game, so of course "new" characters will initially appeal more.
4) Wrex Garrus and Mordin are the true favorites.
Even legion is a favored character.
Other than that, every LI suffers from a skew of some kind or another.

I have to admit that all the ME 1 LI threads are making me dislike those characters more than I initially did.

Following the previous survey yesterday, here is version 3.0 of the survey!
You may view the spreadsheet live here.
I plan to scrap data from version 2.0 of the survey, since I really had planned on that survey being a test survey anyways.
And note... please take this survey only once!
Just one thing, the Intimidate option for Jack-Miranda and Tali-Legion doesn't have you side with anyone. You just berate and threaten both of them. Are those questions asking which character I prefer regardless of how I resolved the disagreement?

Yes.
P.S. I have shut the survey down. Thank you all for voting!

As far as I can see, the relationship with other factions are pretty amicable from the Tali fans ( or outright friendly, as with the Garrus faction ), but I suppose I might well have missed the threads where Tali fans got outright rude about other LI's. I have seen with my own eyes, however, the many threads were at some point someone goes on a huge rant about how he doesn't like the fans of Tali and that is ruining Tali for him, etc. etc.. You know the type, too, I'd guess.

Hm, I must say I haven't seen the excessive hate towards other LI's from Tali fans. Sure, I might rate the other LI's lower than the Tali one, because I felt that they didn't play out as well, but you won't see me or many Tali fans getting all negative, like a portion of Tali fan haters are.

Actually, I've observed something quite strange from quite a few Tali fans. They don't hate on the other female LIs; they seem to hate on Kaidan almost constantly, though.
It's something to take a look at.

1. 100% of people who believe that Miranda is the best character in Mass Effect gave her a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
2. 70.4% of people who believe that Liara is the best character in Mass Effect gave her a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
3. 99.5% of people who believe that Tali is the best character in Mass Effect gave her a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
4. 21.4% of people who believe that Ashley is the best character in Mass Effect gave her a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
And a final random statistic:
1. 38.5% of people who believe that Miranda is the best character gave Tali a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
2. 30.4% of people who believe that Tali is the best character gave Miranda a score of 8 or higher in the overall rankings.
I find Ashley's data most surprising...

Only 10.8% of people who believe that Tali is the best character gave Kaidan a score of 8 or higher.
Conversely, 42.2% of this same group gave Kaidan a score of 4 or lower.

Mhm. 42.2% is a large percentage.
I wonder why this is? Kaidan's not competition for any of the LIs except maybe Liara...

I'll run a random sample:
In a random sample of 420 people surveyed, 45.7% of this random sample gave Kaidan a score of 4 or lower.
In another random sample of 55 people surveyed, 47.3% of this random sample gave Kaidan a score of 4 or lower.
I'd run the two-proportion z-test to make sure, but it seems that Tali fans are not voting Kaidan down deliberately. There seems to be no statistical significance.

I think it boils down to the fact that Kaidan was created for females, which are a minority. This is probably why his score is low in general. He isn't an alien either- from what I've seen, the aliens are thought of as cooler than humans. This would also explain why there's a pocket of people that rate him high as well.

Seems like the ladies don't like Kaidan much either:
43.9% of female voters gave Kaidan a score of 4 or less.

It will be more than a few days... Give me at least two weeks on this one, since there is so much more data to look at.
I have to read several more chapters of Great Expectations for my literature class, finish a five page history paper, and study for a statistics quiz next Tuesday... This semester is starting to heat up a little.
Again, if anyone is interested, the numbers are all on Google Docs. I would love to see collaboration on it. It'll take one man more time to analyze it all...

While I am not in favor of removing people from the poll, it seems odd that quite a few people gave one or two characters a score of 10, and all the rest scores of 3 or less, and few people went as far to give one character a 10, and every one else a 1.
I know it's odd, but it has happened with the first poll, too. Just the nature of polling, it seems.
