I wouldn't say they're doing it deliberately.

I think it boils down to the fact that Kaidan was created for females, which are a minority. This is probably why his score is low in general. He isn't an alien either- from what I've seen, the aliens are thought of as cooler than humans. This would also explain why there's a pocket of people that rate him high as well.

Seems like the ladies don't like Kaidan much either:

43.9% of female voters gave Kaidan a score of 4 or less.

While Kaidan is meant to be attractive to females, I have also seen a number of people say that he puts them off because it is hard to talk to him while playing a female Shepard without sounding flirty (or just ignoring him outright/being rude); similarly, Jacob sometimes has the same problem. If you liked Kaidan immediately, I'm sure that is not an issue, but if you weren't so sure or wanted to just be friends it can be off-putting. And there is a higher proportion of male players playing female Shepards than the other way around, which may contribute to the overall score.

I liked Kaidan in ME1 because of his Carth voice- yeah, I'm a KOTOR fan. He was handsome for a game character, too. But the actual interaction with him up until the point that you wrestled him into the sack against his better sense was drier than I'd have liked it to be. So, when he was so cold and walked away from your femshep after seeing her in ME2, she didn't have much reason to sit around pining. Especially when Garrus was there to support her and be there for her.

I get that Kaidan doesn't trust Cerberus. But he should trust Shepard and her motives after all they've been through. If he could walk so easily away from her, I was determined to make her move on as well.

I was glancing through the results and it seems that a ton of the Tali lovers hate Liara with a vengence. Wow guys, really?

Some interesting results there... It looks like Liara and Ashley in the end turned out to be pretty much the same in score to the perspective of the pollers.

Huh, so far it's looking pretty close to the other surveys in terms of overall scorings.

Personally, I'd like to see stats on the female LIs, or comparative stats like which LIs Paragons prefer over Renegades.

Can't speak for others of course, but no. She was a dedicated member of the team and a good friend. I found her romance back then to be a bit... dry, for lack of a better word.

"Shepard, I sense you are interested in me". I was like "Eh? Where'd that come from"? in front of my monitor back then. After that it got better, but the start was truly awkward.

Thank god we got a natural feeling romance option in Tali now.

The initiation of the Liara romance did seemed rushed, but from that point on I felt it was the best of the option's.

I think it felt rushed because she joined later in the game then all the others, and the fact that when playing an RPG time passes a lot faster for the little people on the screen then it does for a player.  The time it takes to fly from one mission to another in ME could be days, weeks, possibley over a month, it just depends on how far planets are from the Mass Relay you jump in from.

So that fast seeming first conversation could have taken place a good long while after she joined, its not like we spend every waking moment of an RPG watching our character, all the day to day activity and casual conversation is suppose to be considered to take place behind the scenes.

They know who Shepard's true love is. ;)

The devs can even write her out of the game and the other LI's are still jealous.

You will. Give me at least ten days (maybe more). I have two midterms coming up, and those are priority. Plus, I have a paper due on Friday.

If you are interested, you can do always do the numbers yourself. The spreadsheet is available to all.

I've played around a bit in MATLAB with some of the data and got these results, if anyone's interested.

The results can be viewed here

(In case anyone wonders "Freq" refers to how many people that gave the most frequent score.)

Edit: Wierd formatting.

Interesting. Mordin is the absolute winner, ranking highest among women, handily beating even the romance options. A little salarian love in ME3 perhaps? :P

Interesting. Females rate Miranda lower than males.

I'd suspect it's the hater effect.  Miranda, Tali, whoever, they've all got haters voting them down (and vote up their own pet obsession, which causes the various love interest options to equalize somewhat).  But who on earth would actually hate Mordin?  Same deal with Legion, I bet.

Sadly both the "Renegade" and "Female" group (I am propbably one of few that belong to both) has few entries which would mean that the data may be unrepresentative for these groups.

Ignoring the number of entries I could see some interesting things
  • Females seemed to like the "strong" women more (Ash, Samara, Jack) than males
  • Kaidan's most frequent score among males was 1 and among females 10
  • Surprising that Garrus had a slightly lower mean score among females than males
  • Zaeed got a higher mean from Renegades than Paragons (go figure)
  • Morinth got pretty close to the same stats for all groups
  • Everyone loves Mordin!

Perhaps, though it doesn't seem all that far fetched  in the case of  LI's to have strong feelings one way or the other about them. They are designed to appeal to different people I'm sure. However, if there are indeed people that does on that purpose it's quite... sad.
