It's cool an all that Warriors will use their shiels to slam opponents and all that...
But why don't they ever block with it? Even using that shield skill, they never block- then what is the point of having it?
I've seen them block once in a while, and I've even tried makign characters with High dex and such- they just don't use it! ><;;
Am I doing something wrong, or are the game mechanics just a little wonky? I mean I'm just a little irritated that I have a shield- and still I just stand there and take hit after hit.
Shields?

As you already know, your defense determines your dodge and block rate, which is tied to your Dexterity skill. Blocking, parrying with your weapon, and simply dodging attacks outright are all tied to the same statistic. They're just different animations to keep you entertained.
If this game let you take over more control of your party members, yes, blocking in particular might have some specific use. But as of right now, it serves only as a visual representation that your defense skill is working.

Then mine must not be working, he blocks so rarely...Even with a really high defense skill. IS there something else that affects it? Even if I blocked once every FIGHT I might be happy xD
~Playing on the 360 (pre-patch, still haven't gotten a chance to go online), maybe that has something to do with it?
I've seen rogues block and dodge like crazy- but my shield seems rather useless...
(Gotta hand it to bioware, dodgin' an arrow looks sick! xD)

I've found that most of the time, rather than my Warden bobbing and weaving his or her way out of danger, attacks made by the enemy simply miss altogether. I believe this has a higher chance of happening, although there were times where that was simply not the case.
There's nothing wrong with your game being on the console, or your warrior's block-chance. You're just not seeing the dodges being made - which you wouldn't, as they're simply whiffs and misses.

Okay, thanks for the response. I'm still a bit disappointed though, I mean if they replaced more of those misses with the Block animation the fights would be so much more enjoyable.

blocking and parrying, at least in my experience on PC (mods maybe?...), can screw with your attacks and moves, sometimes. definitely noticeable on a 2H-er.

While poking around the combat scripts in the DA toolset, I came across some commented out code that had to do with blocking, and how to handle those events. The actual comment itself said something along the lines of "Couldn't get this in. Maybe for Dragon age 2?"
So, there's hope!

I remeber using the 'parry' skill back in NWN...that actually got to be super annoying after awhile b/c the game 'stopped' for a split second to show a successful parry animation...I finally just deactivated it!

The problem is if they put more animations in for blocking, then you'd be hitting them without seeing animations and the problem would be reversed. I think it's better to just have a block animation once in a while and have most of the defense be considered misses. This way you can make the hit animations a 1-1 hit/animation ratio which looks more realistic.
