This idea was brought up by someone else in a different thread long lost, but I found it kind of nifty.
The idea was to offer a subscription type service in which you would have a monthly fee of X going to a specific studio/publisher/whatever that would provide the revenue stream to help studios produce higher quality DLC and expansions.
As an example, BioWare could make the Cerberus Network a 5/10/15/whatever dollar-a-month subscription service that would finance more DLC and expansions for all BioWare games (ME, DAO, JE, KOTOR, NWN, etc). As a paid service you could expect large, qaulity DLC every month and substantial expansion packs every quarter/bi-annually/whatever. From a BioWare POV this would ensure a steady stream of income to produce more content, and as a result the player gets more frequent updates, patches, and DLC. In essence it turns the standalone singleplayer experience, such as ME2 or DAO into more of a living entity which evolves significantly after its release, more akin to an MMO business model.
It's just a hypothetical, but interesting to think about combining aspects of different business models to better support the developer and the player base.
What do you think? Would you pay a subscription fee to a studio for higher quality, more frequent content updates? Would the subscription fees be enough for studios to justify the continued support of released games?
