It doesn't help matters much that all female characters have arms the size of toothpicks...

Yes it does. I'm not trying to say it makes them look better, but it makes them looks less masculine.

Is it just me or is it very difficult to get an Elven Male to not look like a fairy?
Also the human female body is a bit butch.

Hey! Do you really think my avatar looks like a fairy?

Hmm, I actually find the women to be extremely feminine. I purposely tried to make my avatar's face more masculine because that's what I find most attractive.

As far as the bodies though, I like them, but I guess if you're used to a certain aesthetic for females in video games you could be disappointed...

A "body type" slider from thin to normal to well-muscled would really be good to see in a game.

Sims 3 has two of em ;) Yes, that is a different genre. But it's still EA, I guess Bioware could have borrowed the tech ;)

But I will tell you, based on observation of a lot of Sims 3 mods, there are massive technical challenges with clipping when you do this (considering that the same armor has to fit everybody, and the animated interactions with world objects have to work properly). Which would be why Sims 3 has no height slider... I've played with a mod which added this, and it is a challenge ;) And why high-fantasy RPGs, which are forced to deal with the height issue due to the requirement to have racial differences, tend to opt out of the weight issue.

As for the faces, I agree that the presets are all too pretty, and I've gone out of my way to make my characters look a little more distinctive and individual, and haggard. ALL the origin stories are more or less harrowing.

That's a point, true. Still, it chafes on me every time I see a female character with no real muscle on her bones, especially since I have a strong preference for melee types and want them to look credible.

Many of the presets look too "pretty" in my book as well, but then I don't go for such characters so I'm admittedly biased. Your gal there does look haggard, just the makeup distracts a bit from it IMO. And "distinctive" is definitely the way to go. :)

She looks great! I tried the same with my two warriors though it could probably have turned out better. The Expression slider can help, but only for the avatar, and a smirk wouldn't really suit this one's personality.

In my view, I see elves as the most 'feminine' of the three (playable) races. With a touch of inhuman features. That's what I have in mind, anyway, when I set out to create them. Very delicate and feminine females, not too masculine males. With humans, I like the ladies to have wider set jawlines and lower cheekbones, and males having very wide jawlines and a variety of facial hair. I haven't run into any problems...  at least from the neck up.  There's nothing we can do about the neck down.

I have a feeling that muscularity will be somewhat meaningless once a character is armored. Especially warriors with that bulkier heavy armor, but all classes will have the finer details of thier bodies covered up to a fair degree. General height and width sliders would have been nice, but again that takes alot of extra time with item development whereas with standardized character sizes you can better control how the items look and fit without using up development resources.

If they took those resources and put them to good use, I don't mind the lack of body sliders.

This is still one of my favourite quotea from David Gaider on the BioBoards, that he has in his signature.

Zevran: "Hello my stocky little friend!"

Oghren: "Huh. You got small breasts for a gal."

Zevran: "Ah. This is where we begin the typical dwarven/elven rivalry, is it?"

Oghren: "Nahhh."

Here we go. The most butch woman I could make with the CC:

I rate her 7/10 on the butch scale.

I suppose the reason for females having male bodies and male way of walking is due to clipping issues etc, but I really think it takes away something from the gaming experience. For example when the romanceable NPCs are unnattractive the romances aren't as fun as they otherwise would be.

I think KOTOR and Mass Effect did a good job on female models, it's really sad this part hasn't worked out in DA :(.

I think the manly women thing is more a result of them using the male skeleton to make the women.  It's like how the mage hands are humongous because they are merely gloves/gauntlets that are fleshcolored.

I noticed that too, it's like there is no difference between the size of the body and the size of the clothing/armor that covers it. It's like when they apply the armor on top there is no extra meshes it's just the body with different textures and pauldons for the shoulders...

That's why like you said the hands, and the middle, looks completely disproportionate. It has nothing to do with whether the body is waif like or manly it's just not anatomically right.

Looking forwards to a body mod myself. :P

Bah. Ashley was the most disgusting hag I've ever seen in my life (and I've played Mask of the betrayer, so I've seen computer modelled hags before) and everytime I saw Liara, I kept expecting her brain fluids to pop out of her tentaculous head.Image IPB
