Should we be forced to play a character that is clearly American? What if I want to play Commander Jovovich, Commander Sanchez, or Commander Chang?
Thoughts?

* watch over like a shepherd, as a teacher of her pupil.
And you must have missed Khalisah Bint Sinan Al-Jilani

The last name is set so that people can talk to you, without it then the whole voice acting would be wasted or they would all have to refer to you as Commander or some arbitrary designation.
Shepard is not really an "American" name, it is most likely an allusion to you as a leader and guardian of the people. Its actually an english, and by english I mean the language, name that came from the job of being a herder of sheep.

I've been thinking about it, and by the 22nd century, the human race isn't going to be a mix of all ethnicities. So, following that logic, we aren't going to have many ethnicities with an American name. So what if I want to play someone from the Ukraine, Mexico, or China?

I don't follow your logic, first of all I wouldn't say Shepard is exclusively American there are plenty of other non-American societies where that name wouldn't be unusual, many of them may speak English, but that doesn't make them American.
By saying that someone from Ukraine, Mexico or China can't have that name meams that you are applying a racist slant to it and anyway, who says the human race isn't going to be a mix of ethnicities?
As for the character, it's no different than playing Lara Croft, are the Devs racisist for making her English? This is Shepard's story you can choose some aspects of their character and even their gender but they are still a set character.
Don't be so ridiculous.

Yeah and why is the game in English? It's the 22nd century, why is English still the dominant language? And why is it only on PC's and Xbox 360's? Isn't that prejudiced against people who don't have electricity? And why is this game based on auditory and visual stimuli? Doesn't that discriminate against the blind and deaf? And why do you have to have higher cognitive functions to enjoy the game? Do the developers hate people who are in comas?
The game isn't in English; everybody in Mass Effect has a translator. Do you think newcomers like Drell and Humans are going to know every diplomatic language, like the turians, asari and salarian languages?

But Shepard is an American. Default Shepard is a white man who saves the galaxy. Why can't an asian man save the galaxy?

Because an Asian man couldn't drive the Mako.

Following that logic, wouldn't "Shepard" at that point *not* be an American name (which it isn't to begin with, since it's got English origins, which isn't totally irrelevant, but since your logic here is seriously flawed I felt a need to point out that your geography is as well)?
Following your own logic, "Jovovich," "Sanchez," and "Chan" would no longer hold any geosocial meaning, either, so one name should be as good as any other, right?

This troll attempt is full of fail. He isnt American. He is either a colony kid, born in space, or earthborn (oh noes that implies he is American!).
