I've been thinking about it, and by the 22nd century, the human race isn't going to be a mix of all ethnicities. So, following that logic, we aren't going to have many ethnicities with an American name. So what if I want to play someone from the Ukraine, Mexico, or China?
Should we be forced to play a character that is clearly American? What if I want to play Commander Jovovich, Commander Sanchez, or Commander Chang?
Thoughts?
1) You are right, at 22nd century, humanity will be most likely mix of all ethnicities. So ... Father is American/British and mother could be of any nationality.
2) Isnt every word in the game put through universal translator? Why not pretend, that this translator translate names into english (language commonly know)... Then you can call yourself Sheppard in any language ... (well... Ok, it is funny)
3) If you are earth-born, then you possibly choose your name based on where do you live...
Or his/her parents just liked the name and he grew up with an american accent?

Almost every game forces you to play some sort of pre-defined character. Why the hell is this a racist thing? Are you insane?
Also, the character isn't clearly american and the name isn't american. Most (if not all) 'american' names find their roots in Europe. I shouldn't have to explain why this is. Read some history books.
Really, your ignorance is mind boggling.

Two eyes, check
Two legs, check
Two ears, check
One nose, check
One mouth, check
Hmmm... seems pretty human to me.
Epic picture.

Shepard's name is an homage to Alan Shepard, Jr., the first American and second human in space, which could be cited as an example of Western bias. But many other names of spaceflight pioneers from other nations are used throughout the game (especially in ME1). Armstrong Nebula? Gagarin Station? Aldrin Labs? All named after early astronauts/cosmonauts.
The game was developed in North America, so it is only natural that some cultural bias has been integrated into the game, but in my opinion they've done a good job of keeping it to a minimum. I know if I was playing a game developed in Japan or China, I would expect some cultural bias, and would accept it without taking offense.

I don't follow your logic, first of all I wouldn't say Shepard is exclusively American there are plenty of other non-American societies where that name wouldn't be unusual, many of them may speak English, but that doesn't make them American.
By saying that someone from Ukraine, Mexico or China can't have that name meams that you are applying a racist slant to it and anyway, who says the human race isn't going to be a mix of ethnicities?
As for the character, it's no different than playing Lara Croft, are the Devs racisist for making her English? This is Shepard's story you can choose some aspects of their character and even their gender but they are still a set character.
Don't be so ridiculous.
But Shepard is an American. Default Shepard is a white man who saves the galaxy. Why can't an asian man save the galaxy?
Default Shepard is a Dutchman voiced by a Canadian. My Shepard is somewhat Middle Eastern/African looking and I don't find the name racist.

"American" is a nationality. "Caucasian" is an ethnicity. "Human" is a race.

FFS, Ashley Williams is a Hispanic with an English name. Kaidan Alenko is a Singaporean-Russian. Captain Anderson is a Black Brit with a north american accent. If every character in the game was a WASP the OP may have had a point, but as is?

right on
so I think we've concluded that Mass Effect 1 & 2 are not racist, but simply, WESTERNIZED, which.... is NO ****, SHERLOCK!

One of the game's fundamental messages is the strength of humanity as a whole and the cooperation of all sapient life regardless of species, and you're bothered by the name of the protagonist? With all the respect, the OPs logic implies that his own post is racist - if not Shepard, why a Chinese or Mexican name? Why not a Danish, Slovak, Mozambican, Armenian or Nepalese name?
I couldn't care less. I have the option to give a personal, first name to my character. Normandy's crew was composed of various nationalities, if you look through the dog tags. There are people of various skin colors, names and accents in ME's universe. Honestly, BioWare's setting is one of the most believable and unbiased, without the "token" nationality character and people are still bothered?
Huh... guess it pays of to live in a small country and be less prejudiced.
