I'm American, and I'm half-Chinese, part Irish-Welsh, and part hispanic (my grandmother was from Guatemala). My surname is decidedly Irish-Welsh. Having a last name like Shepard isn't racist, nor is it indicative of anything in particular. Now, can you stop trolling like a complete moron? Idiotic threads like this are a waste of valuable forum space. :P

This.

You only need one ancestor who had the English surname. Going back only seven generations (~200 years), you could be less than 1% American and still have an "American" surname, as long as it was your paternal (5x) Great Grandfather.

I've been thinking about it, and by the 22nd century, the human race isn't going to be a mix of all ethnicities. So, following that logic, we aren't going to have many ethnicities with an American name. So what if I want to play someone from the Ukraine, Mexico, or China?
Should we be forced to play a character that is clearly American? What if I want to play Commander Jovovich, Commander Sanchez, or Commander Chang?

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that you are an idiot. Yes that is a flame.

That's unnecessary and pointless. Almost as pointless as bringing Liara back for Mass Effect 3. She served only three purposes in Mass Effect: decrypting visions, her knowledge of the protheans, and ******-tang.

I responded to a troll with a troll of my own. Is that so hard to believe?

I don't follow your logic, first of all I wouldn't say Shepard is exclusively American there are plenty of other non-American societies where that name wouldn't be unusual, many of them may speak English, but that doesn't make them American.

By saying that someone from Ukraine, Mexico or China can't have that name meams that you are applying a racist slant to it and anyway, who says the human race isn't going to be a mix of ethnicities?

As for the character, it's no different than playing Lara Croft, are the Devs racisist for making her English?  This is Shepard's story you can choose some aspects of their character and even their gender but they are still a set character.

Don't be so ridiculous.

But Shepard is an American. Default Shepard is a white man who saves the galaxy. Why can't an asian man save the galaxy?

Because an Asian man couldn't drive the Mako.

lmao, I'm Asian and I approve of this message.

@ angrytiger, it's shepArd not sheperd

And no... this is NOT racist, default is a white man because guess what, this game was made in the US, and you  knwo what?
  • the majority of the fanbase are probably white males and probably north american.
  • If you want to play an asian, go make one.
  • It wouldn't make sense for a Canadian based (I'm canadian btw) company, BW, to put an Asian at the head of one of their flagship games.
  • John Shepard is a pretty non-descript name, sure it's very North American and white, but you're not going to be able to avoid racial profiling with any kind of name, so why not just keep it as neutral as possible? If you put an asian man on board, what should his  last name be? Whatever you put, it's going to create racial issues among the fans and then other people like YOU, will **** and complain. Hugh J. Wang anyone?

[*]wasn't it made in Canada?
[*]this thread is obviously a troll thread, don't know why morons are taking it so seriously.
[*]look at his past threads

I know an Israeli with the last name Shepard. I know a Brit with the last name Shepard. Doesn't seem racist to me.

I know bioware is canadian. I just can't get over how Canadian shepard is. and sometimes, some of the Asari say something like "agayn" or "aboot" and I just chuckle a bit. I think it's entertaining that Canada conquered the entire ME universe.

Again is pronounced "a-gayn", not a-gen. Remove the A from the word again and what do you have? Gain--pronounced gayn.

Uh...Naveed Shepard says,"Hi." I he is very glad people don't think he is a terrorist because he is an Arabic Muslim, but then he was born in space and shared his deep faith with Ash.

I truthfully don't know. I found it in my photobucket albums, and thought it fit quite nicely within Anvil's troll threads.

Particularly the one about handicapped npc's. I think the shark would do quite nicely as a token handi-capped squadmate.

This is Shepard's story. Not your story. You only influence Shepards actions.
Though, I would agree that I think that there would be more Asians in space, and perhaps a few Ruskies. Heck, the EU won the "Space Race" to colonize Mars. We need an obnoxious french guy NPC...or a sexy french LI.
Oh, and a the galley needs to have a Swedish cook.

Shepard is a typical human last name, a common American one. And you know how America is always on top of everything. -_-
Also I like it how out of all the countries, you for some reason mention Ukraine. I'm from Ukraine. Kudos.
