And here, children, we have political correctness gone mad.Jack Anvil wrote...
I've been thinking about it, and by the 22nd century, the human race isn't going to be a mix of all ethnicities. So, following that logic, we aren't going to have many ethnicities with an American name. So what if I want to play someone from the Ukraine, Mexico, or China?
Should we be forced to play a character that is clearly American? What if I want to play Commander Jovovich, Commander Sanchez, or Commander Chang?
Thoughts?

Normally when I hear (or read) those four words I find myself wanting to stab and stab and stab and shout "MORON!" but.... this time... yes.
Not just gone mad, but covered from head to toe in goats blood and barking at the moon.
It is no more racist that the main character in a Canadian game should have a vaguelly western name and be played by Mark Meer than that the main character in an film directed by John Woo and set in Hong Kong should be played by a man called 周润发.

By using your own logic, not accepting to play as an american or englishman or whatever on the pretext that it is imposed on you although you already fully know that the game has writers like a film or book and therefore the story is predetermined to an extent is on your part ignorant and dare I say racist on your part. Because being racist is not accepting other cultures and that is what you are doing now....
I'm sorry but you fail

Definitions of shepherd on the Web:
* watch over like a shepherd, as a teacher of her pupil.
And you must have missed Khalisah Bint Sinan Al-Jilani
says it right there. I think it was a wise choice for a name. Guy has to collect a group, watch over them, and protect them. Just like a Sheppard or sheep herder does. "Carlos Mencia duh"

Yeah and why is the game in English? It's the 22nd century, why is English still the dominant language? And why is it only on PC's and Xbox 360's? Isn't that prejudiced against people who don't have electricity? And why is this game based on auditory and visual stimuli? Doesn't that discriminate against the blind and deaf? And why do you have to have higher cognitive functions to enjoy the game? Do the developers hate people who are in comas?

Because you're not a game programmer or a writer? If it's a problem by all means, feel free to fix it.

Everyone else here has argued your post very well. But I am going to add something that hasn't been talked about.
1) You do know that the 22nd Century is now less than 100 years from now.
2) I was born and raised and still live in the most segregated place in the United States. Which is Long Island, New York (look it up, statistically and officially is one of the most segregated places in the nation). Now the thing is our towns are greatly segregated but that doesn't mean that we are racist. Originally the banks and lands did discriminate on race but that was 100 years ago and we still segregate ourselves without being racist.
3) I am a Social Studies teacher on the Island. Our schools (most) are a mix of all nationalities and race. Sure there are exceptions but adults and kids who are not racist tend to go out, date and marry people of their own race and nationality. Not because they are racist but because the people of your own race and nationality usually share your traits, activities and culture.
Am I saying that at some point in time humans would be of one race or many? I won't live to know but it is clear that in 90 years we still will be made up of distinct races.
Plus if you read all of your codex's and scan all of your planets in ME2. You come across this little bit of information. The Alliance was formed to represent all of the nations of Earth to the Galactic Community. Much like the UN. There are still nations and "tribal warfare" still exists between them. On one of the planets you come across this information as well. There are 3 major Nations on Earth
Chinese Peoples Federation
European Union
United North American States (United States, Canada and Mexico (probably some Caribbean Nations in there too))
Plus Religion plays a huge role in keeping us disunited. Thane tells you straight out that the Drell have a few different takes on religion but it is nothing like how many different beliefs there are on Earth. So I am certain that our Major religions today didn't magically disappear in 100 years time.

Also, there is no "America" or "Canada" anymore on ME's Earth. Sometime before 2165, a new nation-state called the United North American States was founded, which to me implies a union between the United States and Canada (and potentially Mexico, or at least parts of it). Furthermore, if the Earthborn John Shepard was born in what used to be the United States of America, it's highly likely that by 2154 (his year of birth) he would be at least partially Latino. But maybe he's from the Canadian portion of the UNAS. Or he could be like David Anderson, British by birth but developed a mostly neutral accent due to the planet's homogonous culture. Who knows? That's the beauty of our being able to choose how our Shepard looks, and what his first name is.
