The guy the standard Shepard is modeled after is Mark Vanderloo born in Waddinxveen. If anything Shepard is Dutch, ha!

My Shepard is black anyway, I think of him being born in Jo'burg.

I've been thinking about it, and by the 22nd century, the human race isn't going to be a mix of all ethnicities. So, following that logic, we aren't going to have many ethnicities with an American name. So what if I want to play someone from the Ukraine, Mexico, or China?
Should we be forced to play a character that is clearly American? What if I want to play Commander Jovovich, Commander Sanchez, or Commander Chang?

Thoughts?

I don't follow your logic, first of all I wouldn't say Shepard is exclusively American there are plenty of other non-American societies where that name wouldn't be unusual, many of them may speak English, but that doesn't make them American.

By saying that someone from Ukraine, Mexico or China can't have that name meams that you are applying a racist slant to it and anyway, who says the human race isn't going to be a mix of ethnicities?

As for the character, it's no different than playing Lara Croft, are the Devs racisist for making her English?  This is Shepard's story you can choose some aspects of their character and even their gender but they are still a set character.

Don't be so ridiculous.

But Shepard is an American. Default Shepard is a white man who saves the galaxy. Why can't an asian man save the galaxy?

You're right, he's the spitting image of a Dutch model and voiced by a Canadian actor with an accent to boot. Obviously, he's an American!

The OP logic is about as retarded as one time when I went to hospital with a broken shoulder. A few months earlier I'd just been to India for two weeks. One of the nurses who was looking after me looked Indian, and spoke with an Indian accent. I was genuinely interested in sharing my experiences about India with her and innocently asked: "In which part of India did you grow up?", to which the response I got was: "You're being racist!"

Slightly stunned at the response, and figuring that if an Indian had asked her the same question she would've answered without such a stupid response, I replied with: "No, your response indicates that the only racist here is yourself".

That goes the same for the OP's way of thinking, where people go looking for racism where none exists, and take the use of a particular surname as somehow being racist.

Since Bioware is a Canadian company (GO Canada Go WHOOO!!! >_>) Shepard is probably Canadian? isn't he voiced by a Canadian too? also since when did "white = American"??? And on that note even if Shepard was American you could still be commander chin, chang, sudam, etc etc. last i checked USA, has black, asian, first nation, hispanic, etc, etc, citizens... so whats the problem?

Warning: intended joke stereotype!
Paragon Shepard=Canadian
Renegade Shepard=American

Yeah and why is the game in English? It's the 22nd century, why is English still the dominant language? And why is it only on PC's and Xbox 360's? Isn't that prejudiced against people who don't have electricity? And why is this game based on auditory and visual stimuli? Doesn't that discriminate against the blind and deaf? And why do you have to have higher cognitive functions to enjoy the game? Do the developers hate people who are in comas?

i am blind and i play just fine yea i am two feet from my 32in tv but i make it work lol

As for what the OP said no i don't think its a good idea to have multiple nationalities, the cost outweighs the benifit more VA and programming.  Plus shepard is a symbolic name not an American or western one, its there to be the hero to guide the galexy out of darkness.  Being Slavik Croatian to be formal, I have no problem calling my Shepard, Dragan Shepard it sounds weird but hey it aint that bad.
