Rewriting an MMO as a single-player, offline game.

If any of the developers happen to see this, I'd like to see their thoughts on this question.   Knowing almost nothing about game development, I'm curious: is it at all feasible to rewrite/reprogram/recode/redevelop an MMO in order to make it a single-player, offline game?  I mean, is such a thing even possible?

Thanks in advance for any input.  ;)

(Not a developer, just a CS student very deprived of sleep and wondering if this answer is right.)

It's...possible, but probably horrendously expensive and not something the average developer would contemplate for legal and financial reasons.

It would also be very boring. MMO quests tend to be mostly fetch, collect, farm or deliver and it takes a community to spice things up. A lot of quests would also be made for a group of people so you miss out on lots of game content especially the endgame which is usually the most fun with the best enemies, loot drops etc. Therefore if a game is designed as an MMO it remains an MMO.

Runic is doing the opposite, first they made Torchlight and now they are working on the Torchlight MMO which will be free to play with in game stores. Though they do say that a player never actually needs to purchase anything at those stores, but I will believe that when I see it...

Thanks.  This is the type of answer I was looking for, whether it's feasible, not whether people would like it or dislike it.

Of course, the reason that I asked is because I keep hoping against hope that Bioware will one day release a stand-alone, off-line version of The Old Republic.  I'm not an MMO fan at all but I loved KOTOR so. . .

Thanks again.  ;)

Depends on the architecture. If done right, no problem. If done bad, just make a local private server.
