I've just had a thought on what the dark energy killing the star Tali got data on is about.

What if... there is a third party in the Mass Effect universe. A group or force who are at war with the reapers. Creatures who exist on the same time scale as the reapers themselves. The destruction of stars would be their weapon in a war of attrition.

Without stars, no new galactic civilizations to harvest, and no stars to provide energy. The way I see it, there could be a race of creatures made of dark matter, or some other form of creatures who don't need star power to survive. To them, destroying the stars in the milky way is a whole acceptable idea.

So, what do people think? Weapon of long term warfare being tested on Haelstoms star?

I think it's either a type of failsafe reaper or a mass effect relay inside the star, feeding off the sun's solar energy until the time is right.
