Fixing the planet scanning would be preferrable, but however, it is very unlikely.
Fixes are made to patches, not changes in functionality.

But, for ALL YOU PEOPLE who HATE PLANET SCANNING.

SOLUTION FOLLOWS:

At any point in time, you can edit your save-game using a save game editor.
When you edit it, you will easily see a couple of values, namely the resources you need in-game.
Just change them to 500.000 for each resource, save the save-game in the save game editor and voilá!

Link to save game editor last in this message.

Continue playing without having to scan a SINGLE planet for resources again!
(you might want to scan a couple planets for the quests though? luckily each planet says anomaly reported if there is one on that planet)

And a little story to get you in the mood:
During my first playthrough of the game, I scanned every planet I could, until I had scanned half of the galaxy, then I stopped.
Why did I stop? Did I hate the mini-game so much? NO!
I was starting to feel RSI , for the FIRST time in my life, and I've been a computer user for 20 years.
Now you go on and tell me it is NOT the mini-game, it's just my body.... suure, I will just outright refuse to believe you :)

The biggest problem is holding down the right mouse button while moving the mouse in bigger arcs than necessary (due to the fact they decrease the mouse sensitivity!).
This is the key, to getting Repetitive Strain Injury, not to making a good mini-game.

On my second playthrough, I used the save editor to change my game and didn't scan a single resource (okay, one eezo hit when I sent a probe to the quest dot ;))

And you know what? I feel fine!
I'm happy, my hand doesn't hurt! :wizard:

You just have to ask yourself... If you really hate the planet scanning, why NOT skip it?
Before you answer, don't! Give yourself the thing you want, instead of reasoning against it!
=]

Here we have a link to a support site for the save game editor and other tools:
http://www.masseffec...es.com/mods.php
Version 2.3 of the save game editor (this is the one I used)
http://mod.gib.me/ma...eedit_rev23.zip
Version 2.5 of the save game editor (updated version, I have not tried it)
http://mod.gib.me/ma...eedit_rev25.zip

Thanks for reading, hope this helps you as much as it helped me! :)

It sort of amazes me the planet scanning is such a big deal to some people :) Not ridiculing, just marveling here :)

I spent about an hour and a half scanning like mad, and once I hit the resource requirements for every upgrade in the game, I don't have to bother scanning at all. I like it for the change of pace. But nice mod none the less :)

Something about this seems hinky. It just seems like such a pitch for something so... Yeah, I dunno, maybe I'm just too cynical.

I think that the mouse settings you may have may help many people.

My mouse was _very_ slow in the mini-game, forcing me to move the mouse over half of the table to scan around :)

This movement, combined with keeping the right mouse button pressed was the reason I got close to having a bad case of RSI for the first time in my life.

I take _no_ credit for the mod, I have not made it, I only used it, and it worked like a charm for the use I used it for (resource editing). It has a simple user interface :)

I admit I've done the same... my first play through the game I did all the planet scanning and probing required. I was sick of it, and my wrist was tired. Yeah... it might be cheating. But somehow, I really don't care after going through it once already.

In Mass Effect 1, I had a choice of doing the MAKO survey stuff, in ME2 I have to scan planets or I can't get upgrades.

Personally, like you, I didn't spend that long scanning planets about 2 or 3 hours with resources to spare, BUT this hugely impacts on replayability, this and the difficulty spikes during combat especially on Horizon.

It didn't affect my replayability one bit, because I circumvented the planet scanning by use of the save game editor :P

Save hacks are the only thing allowing me to consider a 2nd play-through.

Oh, I'm terribly sorry for you :crying:

Perhaps, if you bought a PC, and then of course you'd have to purchase the game in the PC format also, but then, then you could really enjoy Mass Effect 2 (the way it was meant to be ™)

I apologize, too much planet scanning in my first playthrough made me this way

Oh, I have a PC which is quite capable of running Mass Effect 2, but my saves are from the XBOX version of Mass Effect 1.

The planet scanning is a huge pain in the rear end, but it's not the only thing in ME2 which is curtailing my replayability. The story is a little insipid compared to ME1, and I feel like a fetch/carry person for my 'brood', then there's all the upgrades traipsing, If i'm going to replay it'll probably me Mass Effect 1 i'm afraid.

It's a pity because there's a bleeding great game in ME2 which is aching to get out.

I feel like you, there could have been many improvements in regards to ME1, however, it seems they only went and improved some things, while utterly destroying some things that worked in ME1.
I guess we can only hope and pray they don't keep heading the same direction in ME3, because that would spell a disaster.

Having both the PC and the Xbox version, let me tell you that the PC scanning is a lot better. If you think holding down a mouse button is bad try holding the trigger down.

Mmm, I haven't even had time to finish my first playthrough because of my major, so everything's at a snail's pace.

Maybe this is just me having "delicate" hands, but the Wii is the only system with a controller that doesn't just DESTROY MY HANDS.  PS3 isn't bad, but it gets old fast.
