To avoid too much exposure to hyper-reality I hide myself behind dumb-bells, barbells, beer, my guns and my bike. Oh and a hefty dose of Dragon Age.

It works.

I think you misunderstood Lilith's request, Woldan. :o This is so not a good reaction. Shame on you! Besides, eating people? Gross! And how hard can it be catching a person anyway? Don't be so lazy. If you want a real challenge hunt a lion or bear with only a spear. :P

The ancient Cantabrians and Asturians did that as a ritual for the coming of age. ;)

I know, right?  Not to mention I'm from Auckland, where you barely have to step sideways and there's water.

Well, I don't mind beaches all that much, provided you just don't ask me to get into the water, onto a boat, eat anything from it... yeah, I'm a killjoy.

This may sound off, but the book Born to Run has convinced me to try running barefoot. my feet just feel so much better the more time I spend out of shoes (and years ago a podiatrist told me I needed orthotics, which I wore and they didn't help). I have spent the last couple of days walking and lightly running with no shoes on. It's hard, and there's a technique to it (check out The Running Barefoot) but it's exhilerating.

I used to hate running, now it's kinda fun.

Excellent movie! Based on a real story!

And how hard can it be catching a person anyway? Don't be so lazy. If you want a real challenge hunt a lion or bear with only a spear.

Pff thats WAY too easy, just wait until the bear gets on his hind legs to stomp you with a frontal attack, put one end of the spear into the ground and let the bear impale itself. Just watch ''The Edge'' with Alec Baldwin and Hannibal Lecter Anthony Hopkins.

And If I had to hunt a bear I would grab my K98k and some beer. Death from afar, reach out and touch hard. B)

Bears are not that stupid to just go and "hug" your chest when you have a very nice spike to tell them "welcome!".

The problem with those animals is mass and speed: if they charge you´re done. problably the way they were hunted was kind of a "creative sodomy" thing with a spear in their anus and then, twisting it till massive wounds and pain made the animal collapse. Thus, the skin is not really ruined to be turned into leather.

I was just referring to the movie, I know that bears are very intelligent and QUICK animals. I know a hunter who hunted Kodiak Bears in Alaska and brown bear in Russia. You are pretty much screwed if you encounter a bear at 50 meters or less, because he is already gutting you while youre still trying to get the rifle shouldered if you are not well trained with your rifle.

Amongst hunters its a well know fact that you can only fire one shot if a bear attacks you from 20-30 meters, thats why they have to train a fast an instinctive shot at the head of the bear.

I would carry no less than a semi-automatic locked and loaded high caliber rifle with me if I were in bear-country. Like the 7.62x51 FN-FAL loaded with 155 grain softpoints. Maybe I could get off two shots, maybe spray and pray.  But I wouldn't feel comfortably carrying a bolt action rifle.

I've seen the remains of people which had no chance against a brownie...I tell you, ripped to shreds...

Pffft all I ever needed was a paper clip, a length of string, two rubber bands, and a waffle.

So we´re talking about bears...

Interestingly enough, the ones in Spain are quite peaceful animals when they are not desperate because of hunger. Apparently, we humans smell bad to their noses and they basicaly get away from humans as much as they can. But, if you just see them and ignore them, they will just look your way, make a kind of "pfeew, humans" face and just keep on doing their thing.

I have come across a couple them both in the Central System and in Cantabria and those are majestic animals to see.

Just make sure that you don't cross their ways if they are eating like mad close to hibernation or you'll turn into dead meat. They wouldn't pass the chance of having 95 kg of meat as almost free lunch, even if you smell bad. They are omnivore after all.
One way to avoid bears is putting a little bell to your foot, the strange noise will scare them away.
